Reskeet if you are in the United States and are, in fact, like "oh my gosh, I will die if I don't have health care" politicalwire.com/2024/10/17/b...

I wish more prominent authors would say this to their publishers, and those who lobby on their behalf like the Authors Guild and the AAP. Libraries are great for Authors and readers.
Honestly I would like to find whoever it was who first posited into the public consciousness the idea that there is some sort of conflict between libraries lending books and authors getting paid, because I would really like to kick their ass in about it.

How does fair use help libraries? Internet Archive's senior policy counsel, Lila Bailey, outlines how the fair use doctrine has helped us build our library, including web archives with The Wayback Machine & a growing collection of manuals: blog.archive.org/2024/03/01/f...

Your library doesn't own these ebooks, they are just paying more money to a corporate vendor for you to access copies faster. Nothing is added to library shelves. We need #digitalownership not more false scarcity.
Sometimes I feel a little guilty that I don't buy as many books as I used to. Then I see something like this on my Libby account, realize that by being part of this system, I helped get my library to buy 67 copies of an e-book (plus an unknown but presumably substantial number of print copies).

This might be flying under the radar (so please RT!), but the US Copyright Office is soliciting comments for its decisions on training ML/NLP/AI systems on copyrighted material (even *non*-generative AI). They need to hear from researchers, so please comment! Deadline Oct 30. www.copyright.gov/ai/
