Figuring out post-Army life in the PNW. Lots of Mom-Posting. She/Her.

Lucy Calkins' #2 hater

Play it fucking loud.
Alright I'm gonna disengage from looking at replies mocking the very idea that people might have an actual use for a more rugged rosary.

I'll just say that I am grateful that the Catholic Church sponsors chaplains in the military and that I found those church services comforting as a young soldier.

I mean I probably would have bought one of these my first years in the Army.

They're making a joke about temporarily aligning with MTG to get the Epstein files vote to pass. Allying temporarily with people you normally disagree with in order to accomplish specific goals is how a democratic republic works. But get mad about it instead if it makes you happy.

My "I swear I'm still dating the woman I left my wife and newborn baby for" t-shirt is raising a lot of questions already answered by my shirt

People should feel free to enjoy the canned goo if they like canned goo but Ocean Spray also sells whole cranberries so if you would like to feel morally superior you can do that with homemade cranberry sauce or relish too 😉
My #SuperlativeCannedGoo tweet from the old place is making rounds again. Support co-op cranberry growers!

If there's one thing I've learned from my rantings about reading instruction in the US over the years it's that math teachers are expecting the same kind of reckoning to come for them eventually.
Math grades k-3: common core math is different from the old drill and memorization method you used, we show children a variety of ways to solve problems so that they can always intuit a way to get the answer

4th grade: so actually we would prefer if they just memorize their times tables

Except no child left behind wasn't the problem. The problem is we haven't been teaching phonics. Bush actually wanted to mandate phonics instruction as part of NCLB but the teachers unions and Democrats fought against it.

There are valid criticisms of NCLB but this isn't one.

Was skimming through some r/figureskating threads about Skate America, which is at Lake Placid this year, and one of the people who traveled to Lake Placid to watch was wondering how on Earth that town was able to handle hosting the Olympics and the answer is "badly".

This is Elise Stefanik's congressional district.

Once again tapping my sign that the best way to address housing affordability is to tie housing construction to school funding. To build or expand schools in Washington state, voters must approve a construction levy. This means population growth is directly tied to higher property taxes.
Today I announced an agreement between Washington state, Oregon, and British Columbia to renew and strengthen our partnership.

Together, the Cascadia region will address housing affordability, invest in clean energy, and create the conditions for long-term economic growth.

Non-zero chance that's exactly what they are and someone in the 3 shop named them that as a joke, thinking a higher ranking person would catch it and change it later.
Ok these all sound like gay porn titles.

I grew up in a community where adults I knew and trusted ended up being pedophiles.

And at least one ended up being falsely accused.

The thing about violent rhetoric is when you normalize it, you also normalize it against people when you don't actually yet know whether the accusations are true.
I think violent rhetoric against pedophiles is fine actually. Do you not?

There are certain jobs in adulthood where you're not be able to have extra time and scores should reflect that when testing for those qualifications. However when we are talking about 8 year olds learning to read and do math, you give them accommodations.

Ngl I feel vindicated that r/figureskating now hates Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski's TV commentary as much as I have since around 2018-2019.

When I was 10 a teenager broke into the home of my grandmother's best friend and bludgeoned her to death in her bed. The authorities found the guy who did it and he ended up in prison.

I have never had a prison abolitionist (as opposed to reformist) explain to me the more just alternative.

The Trump/Clinton thing was definitely a joke/hyperbole that you all decided to take literally because you thought it was funny

....right?

The hospital (Dallas Regional Medical Center) has turned off all comments on social media. I don't think they've made an official statement yet.

The video is hard to watch. If you've given birth without an epidural, you know that "in the butt" feeling means the baby is coming NOW.
The mother and grandmother want their story shared to expose the mistreatment they endured at the hands of a racist medical staff

The way they handled her son and her is unacceptable

Linda Tirado is no longer on hospice care and is quite active on BlueSky.
Linda Tirado, a photojourno is apparently on death's door due to her injury.

I am re-watching Stranger Things in preparation for the final season being released and Lucas is low-key my favorite of the younger kids this time around. I don't remember feeling that way the first time through!

Point of order, I think most people tend to get SUVs these days because it's hard to fit those giant rear-facing carseats in a standard sized car and it's nearly impossible if you have more than two kids who need to go in the backseat.

Yesterday I learned that the US Navy has a tiara option for female sailors to wear in dress uniform and I for one think they are missing a huge opportunity for recruitment by not making this more well-known. I did not know the Navy had tiaras when I was picking my service branch. I feel cheated.
