She/her. Queer as in (I don't want to) fuck you.
I know there are currently lots of reasons to lose faith in one's fellow human, but twice in the past two days, someone has used their left turn signal to indicate they were turning right, and that might be what breaks me.

38. Ordinary people have no idea how much progress we’ve made. Tell people at parties that UK carbon emissions in 2023 were at their lowest level since 1879, for example. Most developed economies are now reducing carbon emissions without lowering quality of life.

The power is out and the electric company hasn't reached out, but the Internet did! Thanks, Comcast, but I think your outage is the least of my issues... The best part was all of us neighbors walking out our front doors, checking that everybody else was also in the dark, and then walking back in.

Students are often surprised to learn abt the lynching of Italian immigrants under Jim Crow. While these represented a fraction of the victims of this national regime of racial terror, anti-Italian violence was designed to prevent multiracial organizing against Klan country.

I now realize that for my entire adult life, I've had a very narrow conception of what "supporting and defending the Constitution" means. Standing on business when armed agents of the State are knocking on your door is way more important, by a country mile, than anything I did overseas
Border Patrol “attempted to arrest a plumber working inside a Logan Heights home but left empty-handed after the homeowner refused them entry.

The homeowner told agents she would not allow them inside because the warrant they presented did not include her address and lacked a judge's signature.”
Federal immigration operations target San Diego neighborhoods, sparking community resistance
Federal immigration agents conducted operations in Logan Heights and Southeast San Diego on Friday, with community members capturing footage of the enforcement actions.

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society
What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

Republicans just brought the House into session for a total of 2 minutes.

Democrats tried to bring up legislation to keep government open, keep children on their insurance, and keep health care costs from doubling.

Then they adjourned. The GOP will own this shutdown.

1. More Americans work at the Cheesecake Factory than in the entire coal industry, and that won't change. It's because of automation, not snooty libs.

2. Coal energy is now more expensive than wind and solar.

3. So this means: higher energy prices, more pollution, no jobs benefit. Genius!
Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

The idea that if you make Dems a little more Republican, Republicans will vote Dem is what’s breaking us. And it doesn’t even work!
I genuinely cannot believe that Ezra Klein said we should run pro-life candidates in Kansas, Ohio, and Missouri; three states that recently held abortion referendums where the pro-choice side won!

It is the job of the Democratic party to sell and defend the policies that most Democratic voters want, not to present a candidate slate that is palatable to moderate Republicans who might switch if they hate their own candidate enough.

"Political violence" is a term that exists to suggest a moral distinction between "violence against politicians" and "violence by politicians" - so that one can be condemned while the other can be normalized. Obviously, no such distinction exists in reality: violence is violence.

I am firmly in the camp of "I read fiction for escapism" and prefer to keep my sad/angry/confusing endings for non-fiction. It doesn't mean I can't read sad/mad things, but so much of fiction delivers unhappy endings so ham-fistedly that I'm twice as annoyed.
me: i'm a grown up! i am working in a narrative universe that does not promise a traditionally happy ending! in fact the very concept of a happy ending is a false comfort we cling to in a fundamentally impermanent world!

Had my first yard hummingbird yesterday! I put together the feeder this morning and two of them showed up to fight over it this evening. Hummingbirds are migrating south, so providing native pollinator-friendly plants and feeders helps them fuel up! They probably first came for my New York Ironweed.

If I could give only one recommendation for avoiding a bad dog trainer it would be: avoid anyone who spouts bullshit about being a pack leader or an alpha. Yes, there are lots of other qualifications to be a decent trainer, but 95% of bad trainers spout alpha BS.
