The White House is now citing "national security" for everything it does. Seriously, check out these headlines. It's just the last few weeks.

If you know authoritarian history, then you know how menacing this is.

I’m so glad we put so much financial and political support behind the tech industry so they can come up with amazing new ideas like charging you 23% more for the same groceries

Now seems like a swell time to point out that Frontline just released this excellent 11-minute mini-documentary about what happened inside CECOT.

There’s just so much kindness and deep-down decency on display in this video and it comes across as entirely genuine.
It was such a joy to celebrate Hanukkah with Mandy, Kathryn and their son, Gideon. As Jewish New Yorkers across our city prepare to light candles and mark the seventh night today, I wish you and your families a Hanukkah full of light and love.

While a bunch of journalists were at the Kennedy Center taking pictures today, I asked the VP of Facilities and Operations at the Kennedy Center a direct question:

“Matt, is this the first time that you’ve defaced a public building?“

I’m opposed to the austerity mindset but one place I’ll embrace it is “let’s pay peanuts for vaccines and save millions on treating painful and dangerous preventable illnesses.”
I know people are rightly going to be worried about child health, their own health. But we also can't afford this. Like, John Hopkins did an estimate (next link) and every measles case during outbreaks cost on average $43,000 to treat. That kid who got tetanus cost $1 million dollars to treat /1

Here in Delaware we have a statue of Thomas Garrett, a white man found guilty of obstructing the recapture of fugitives from slavery – ordered to pay damages to the point of ruin for it.

We don't, to my knowledge, have any statues celebrating the judges or jury members who found him guilty.

This is so painfully dumb. As a zillion others have noted LOTS of people who use and need a wheelchair to get around can walk short distances with effort. But also: Do they really imagine there’s some huge pool of people who’d go to the trouble of FAKING A DISABILITY to skip a ten minute line?

This article is so frustrating because there's important new stuff in here but the structure is so bad -- it rambles, it treats stuff we've known forever and its own scoops as if they're equally revelatory -- that its impact is blunted.

Also, coincidentally, she has over 67,000 followers on X, yet almost no views on any of her posts.

I have to stop calling everybody I've ever met to pick up my sons. Fatherhood doesn't stop on "announcement day."

We could never afford to send both to daycare. One stayed home until the other went to TK at a public school. It should be easier for families than this. Let's fight for it.

We cannot afford this broken system any longer. Higher premiums. Expensive groceries. A criminal administration's knee on our neck while the powerful pick our pockets. It's unsustainable and it must end.

I've told this story before, but an editor once told me I didn't get an interview for a job because they were looking for non-white people.

After spending a bit more time in the industry I realized I'd been completely unqualified. Charitably, they were trying to spare my feelings.
The real story: with decreased opportunity, these white men experience the success of people of color as symbolic.

When humanities jobs cratered, I was told I wasn't getting hired because I was white. The disappearance of hundreds of jobs, reinterpreted as the fault of a small handful of people.
