One of my most cherished classes is my 18th century novels course where the primary learning objective is "learn how read long novels." We did a "couch to 5k" approach to attention span and note-taking.
My hot take about the “students cannot read whole novels / watch whole films / etc.” is that they can learn to do it. None of us are born with attention spans suited for long media. It is a learned skill and can be developed with practice.

there’s a scene in the new documentary where Elizabeth Taylor is talking about the stigma of AIDS and how she got involved in the movement and it’s fucking everything

What if libraries provided 1-page info sheets for job candidates? For a cataloger position, this might look like: we've been using [x] ILS for [x] many years, we're part of [x] consortia, our departmental strengths are [x, y, z], the projects on our horizon are [a, b, c]. 📚

Trump is going to continue to do everything in his power to try to incite violence somewhere. If Portland and Chicago don’t work, he’ll probably go to New York.
He’s looking for a reason to invoke the Insurrection Act.

Seriously. Please don't take the bait. No room to mess around here. All bets are off if this happens. Full stop.
Not only does this story get a number of basic facts wrong, it doesn’t take time to actually explore why Portlanders elected these folks. Coming in with a pre-baked PDX story to fit a NYT narrative about NYC is harmful, especially at this moment.

Social justice, community building, making money, exploring hobbies, whatever -- is NOT dependent on SPECIFIC apps to be successful. If users cannot untangle their preferences/ideologies/goals from a specific platform, then fully expect that platform to exploit this fact

When I worked for the college newspaper, we would visit the regional press once a year. It was responsible for all printing within something like a 100 mile radius. And it was just like, two dudes in safety gear on an otherwise empty factory floor

It's pretty amazing being able to read something that you're slightly interested in without being served 20 versions of it daily for the next three months
