The show needed monetary support from a fanbase that would care enough about the story and characters to willingly contribute to it. The people who wanted the show to stay formulaic were less likely to put their money where their mouths were in favor of free entertainment.
When people start talking about how much Helluva Boss would have been a better show if it didn't have "toxic yaoi" but I promise you with every fiber of my goddamn being that this series would never have garnered the fanbase it did w/ the original "kill of the day" formula.
