Aww she's so cute! Did you adopt her recently? :O
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
But hey, at the end of the day, this is all my subjective opinion. If you liked it, good for you. I just felt neutral about it at best, personally.

Review over!
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
While the rest of the show could improve on this front, it's very clear that some tweaking could've been done to the pilot in order to find the right balance because newcomers can be lost and confused with it when they're not in the middle of praising the Disney-esque visuals that come with it.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
I couldn’t get attached to Rocky, Freckle, and Ivy as characters, because the pilot didn't have any elbow room for me to get to know these characters or give me a reason to get attached to them.

They're one-dimensional at best. Rocky's a chaotic gremlin, Freckle's anxious, and Ivy's just...there.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
Lackadaisy's pilot lacks the balance of helping newcomers understand the context and setting while simultaneously winking at longtime fans of the comic.

And I'm not asking for a profile page of each character, or lore pages of the setting, but at least just the basics for one to easily grasp.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
Helluva Boss's Mission Zero also worked in the same way, and that was made after the show had TWO seasons, yet it manages to be a perfect balance between introducing newcomers to the show, while also catering to fans who already have knowledge of the setting.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
There needs to be a balance of introducing the concept to newcomers, but leaving enough easter eggs for OG fans to spot

Take the first episode of Hazbin for example. Yes, it helps if you saw the pilot, but it also does enough to introduce newcomers into the show and understand what's happening.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
It didn't say "Yeah, these lower-class demons just HAPPEN TO HAVE an all powerful spellbook that grants them access to the mortal plane, roll with it!" When you watch the pilot, be it the OG or Mission 0, you're able to understand the setting, context and get to know the characters.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
Compared to Helluva’s characters and setting, yes I’m going there, they had memorable moments that made me stick with them, even when it was just the pilot at the time. Even the pilot gave us context on HOW a gaggle of imps and a hellhound have an all powerful spell book, and what their business is.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
There wasn't really any moment of these three in the pilot that stuck with me, that I find myself looking back on and remembering their schticks. Only exception is Rocky but he's a bit of a low bar, considering that most of the time he's just chaotic and/or laughing unhinged.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
Now, lemme briefly talk about the characters, specifically our trio of protagonists.

There's Rocky, the chaotic gremlin, Freckle, the skittish, anxious one, and Ivy, the lead girl...I think. Either way, that's....really all there is to them.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
Yes, there was that lore drop in the beginning, but that only gives us a historical context of the setting itself. Not how our protags ended up in said situation specifically.
We're just expected to know why they're there and roll with it. What is a helpless audience member to do with this?
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
As someone who hasn't read it, I had no idea who these characters were, what the stakes were, why they were in some graveyard stealing booze from someone's grave, or even how they ended up in this situation of smuggling alcohol illegally to begin with.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
The pilot also felt less like an introduction to its series and more like a standalone short based on the webcomic of the same name.

It throws you in, expecting you to know who these characters are. Which is all well and good…if you’ve read the webcomic.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
The pilot, while having decent pacing, failed to make the characters, story, and setting stick with me.

It's like Studio Ghibli put all its time and effort into the visuals, in exchange for the story and characters. LD feels sanitized, holding back its full potential of what it could be.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
Lackadaisy. What does it have? Well, the animation and art style are, for one, gorgeous and visually appealing to look at, giving a capture of that classic old-timey Disney-style. But here’s where the finger on the monkey’s paw curls.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
Note that I'm not going to bring up the whole drama with their Kickstarter and their animator, and that this is all my subjective opinion.
kirbywarriors.bsky.social
So I figured I'd write down my own thoughts on what I think of Lackadaisy, since it's been over a couple of years since its pilot dropped, and it got picked up by Glitch recently.

I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been

It's so funny when psuedo-progressives try to justify their Puritan views by furiously trying to write like a scholar.

"*buzz word, buzz word, buzz word* Therefore, bad."

Congratulations, you strung several words along without reason.

"Her characters are commercializing LGBTQ culture and reducing us to negative stereotypes!"

Well I'm not so sure I agree wi-

"Scavenging binary culture - such as it is - in a state of euphoria will never be acceptable." I..bu...di...WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN???

You know what I miss about the 2010s? It felt like the internet was unapologetically cringe. Like yes, there were flaws, but it didn’t feel like a majority of people had this weird pearl-clutching urge to have a moral high ground and harass people for simply loving something or calling them cringe.
