A key driver of Trump/Vance/Musk behavior is that they see empathy as just a way people try to control them. To resist appeals to empathy, they have to paint anyone who invokes empathy as manipulative and “just as bad” as they are.
I have warned about the rightwing attack on empathy. It is as dangerous as any attack on democracy. It is an attack on our humanity. Once you turn off empathy you can do anything.
