At a time when cinema faces a crisis--being downgraded to "content"--CASABLANCA is a movie I suspect will always survive as cinema.

CASABLANCA has remained an ubiquitous feature of Greatest Movies of All Time lists for longer than most reading these words here today have lived. It was among the first films selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

That screenplay--the real one--won the film an Academy Award, the film snagging, overall, 7 nominations and winning 3 trophies, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Even a culturally misremembered line--"Play it again, Sam," never uttered in the movie--has stayed with us.

Much of the film's dialogue has been so completely absorbed by the culture that one doesn't even need to argue for the strength of the script; if you've grown up in America, you've heard it all your life, even if you've never seen or even heard of the movie itself.

Directed by Michael Curtiz and with a powerhouse cast headlined by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, CASABLANCA is perhaps the high-point of classical studio-system Hollywood, a miracle of the assembly-line never replicated with such enduringly iconic results.

To be a successful one also requires, as corollary, a certain degree of intelligence--a degree that doesn't necessarily have to be great but one as beyond Biden's capabilities as Alpha Centauri.

His regime went exactly as expected by those of us who had long known him.

No. To accomplish much that mattered would require fighting for those policies, something Biden was neither inclined to nor even capable of doing. A leader has to lead, not preemptively surrender because doing anything takes work.

That's the fairy-tale version of Biden offered by his supporters. In the real world, he's the guy who screwed up dealing with Trump and was so bad that the vast majority of his own party didn't even want him to run again.

Regardless of what happened with Sanders, Biden was unfit to run. Not just because of his appalling history--which was swept under the rug by most of the corporate press during that contest--but because he was cognitively impaired.

Yep, and then Clintonite-right "Democrats" and their corporate press enablers attacked Sanders for not dropping out of the race, thus forcing states to hold unsafe primaries during covid--primaries that were going to happen regardless of what Sanders did and that the DNC was forcing to happen.
November 26, 2025 at 2:12 AM
At the very least, the many who attacked Casto for alluding to Biden's cognitive impairment should apologize (if not commit public seppuku). The disgrace for that lies mostly with the corporate press, which also swept Biden's entire history under the rug.

All true. Biden never should have been elected and never should have been the 2020 nominee. He would have been the wrong person for that job and that time even before his brain was boiled (and it was already boiled in 2019).
November 26, 2025 at 2:07 AM
No matter who Biden chose, it was going to be the same story, because that's just who Biden is. He never should have been elected and never should have been the Dem nominee.
November 26, 2025 at 2:05 AM
Perhaps you'll run on that slogan in the next election and we'll see how it goes for you.

And Garland wasn't to blame for it; that was Biden's call. He was determined to do absolutely nothing about Trump's criminality and never would have done anything if the 6 Jan. Commission hadn't publicly shamed him into it (too later to matter).
November 26, 2025 at 2:01 AM
Biden should have immediately prosecuted Trump--thrown the book at him--but he was determined never to go after him. As for Biden himself doing better in office, there was never any chance of that. He is what he is, and it just wasn't what America needed or wanted.

More than one thing can be true at a time. The Trump regime blaming Biden for everything is ridiculous AND the Biden administration could’ve done more to prevent us from being in this situation right now.

It's not a great movie by any measure but it is a really beautiful one.

You're aiming at the wrong target at the end there.
