With how sharp the drop was in the sprint, people with nothing to lose going for 3 stops might not be unreasonable. The end of those 25 stints are gonna be sloooooow.
Time loss of 10 laps on absolutely dead tyres compared to the gain of 10 laps on new softs could be enough to cover the stop.

Cough's can be insanely powerful. One would assume that combination of a a highly trained driver, with a lot of core strength work, and a very restrictive harness could be a combination for that kind of damage.
