Fascinating essay on *why* some cultures are terrified of reheating rice and others just...do it every day.
The justification cycle - racialised thinking, call to science, appeal to long past and/or 'traditional' wisdom - seems universal for this sort of food story #histFood

Already seen some mentions of 'Blue Monday'. While that's imaginary, it's still worth pointing out that tomorrow is Dolly Parton's birthday and what could be less blue than listening to some Dolly. It's also my birthday, but I have no output, so stick with her. (It's also Edgar Allan Poe's)

I'm imagining the kick back there might be about this performance NOW, and this is 94 years ago.
I've heard Cab Calloway do "Minnie the Moocher" plenty of times, but until I watched The Big Broadcast (1932), I never knew just how MUCH the song has to do with cocaine addiction.

'In this crazy world, what are your hopes for 2026 Jo?' one might ask. Well I'm wondering if maybe this'll be the year I figure out what to do with my arms when I'm sleeping on my side.

1-3 of the alternatives is always yes, obviously.
Some alternative questions:

1. Should I add butter to this food?
2. Would melted cheese on top improve this food?
3. Should I add a bit more butter to this food?
4. What's on telly?

I don't think it's going to challenge Nigella - but, inspired by Greggs, yesterday I made a 'leftovers slice'; layer of cold meat, layer of cranberry jelly, layer of pre cooked sausagemeat, layer of bacon, layer of stuffing all wrapped in puff pastry and shoved in the oven for half hour. 10/10.

Do any Private Eye readers still have their copy containing the EJ Thribb poem about Dickie Bird? It'd be very handy for the Christmas crossword, which I'm having a bash at as part of my lifelong project to learn not be shit at cryptic crosswords. I won't be challenging for the cash prize...

Seen this go past a lot and never mind for/against, the fact is if the CA were an even half competent organisation, they would have spent the last 20 years making sure that hunts were acting within the law. This tightening/progression has happened because people consistently took the piss (1/)

I feel like every year I say this to somebody who's hearing it for the first time. I've told two people so far this week, even though on a clear day you can already tell the evenings are drawing out
The sun sets earliest in London on 12 December (15:53).
The sun rises latest in London on 31 December (08:04)
So, celebrate that evenings been lighter for nearly a week now.

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.
