FDNY commissioner cites ‘fundamental differences’ with Mamdani as reason for resignation
“It’s a complicated emotional decision to leave, but ideologically there’s no doubt that the mayor and I disagree on some very fundamental things,” he said.

Picked up my annual apple crumb pie from the bakery & a fifty-cent onion roll. Pretty good with some coffee. Don't get many good things for fifty cents these days. At least from a bakery.

NEW: The two shot National Guard troops never should have been in DC. More troops is no answer.

The violence is horrible and unacceptable. Trump, Pete Hegseth, and West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey never should have put the troops in this position.

Happy Thanksgiving, all!!

Over at “One First,” I re-upped one of the newsletter’s first bonus posts—about the significance of Thanksgiving growing up in a family of overachieving lawyers.

If you have a moment today, I hope you’ll check it out:

Bonus 194: Happy Thanksgiving!!
For the holiday, I wanted to re-up one of this newsletter's very first posts—a reflection on the significance of Thanksgiving in my family growing up, and the surfeit of lawyers to whom I'm related.

I am a little tired of being yelled at for this but apparently not tired about: heroin addiction is not RFK’s problem. He’s a sociopath. Most addicts aren’t. Honestly, walk into an NA meeting, grab the first person with a few years to be head of HHS and they’d probably do a better job than Bobby.
This is what happens when you put a privileged, 14 year heroin addict in charge of health. Duh

This is disgusting.

Ronald Reagan refused to acknowledge the AIDS crisis. Even refused to help his "friend from the Hollywood days" Rock Hudson.

George W. Bush waited 7 years to recognize World AIDS Day.

And now we are back to a POS GOP POTUS who will ignore it.

The news is still depressing and aggravating.

Obliterating the VRA to enforce the VRA? #SCOTUS
Social science takes time. Here, social scientists analyze a decade of evidence to show that a Supreme Court decision designed to suppress the black vote actually did. SCOTUS may soon obliterate the rest of the Voting Rights Act and we should not be shy about calling out what's going on here.
As we all wait for Callais to come down, our piece showing that Shelby County increased the racial turnout gap in most of the covered parts of the country has cleared the replication check and is incoming at JOP.

Gutting the VRA was bad, actually.

Into the 1970s, women senators basically filled in for their husbands or others for short terms. Two women senators, most notably Margaret Chase Smith, were re-elected multiple times after filling in. The first woman senator served one day.

I’m not an archaeologist, nor do I really know anything about shoes, but let’s go on this journey together.

How can a book on the first woman member of Congress skip over her role in the 18th Amendment (which was passed in Congress while she was there) & her opinion on the 21st Amendment?

I suppose she supported the 18A since it was noted she was supportive of prohibition before she was in Congress.
