Interesting to compare these two recent headlines in the CBC. Glad to see Canadians supporting their own. (links to articles below)

1/16 The Scratcher: A Brick and Kammers Halloween Special

Kammers hated Halloween. It always reminded him of The Scratcher, which was said to be a deranged creature that walked about, dragging it’s gnarled claws, looking for small rattlings to gobble up.

October 13th – Vachel Lindsay – ‘The Spider and the Ghost of a Fly’ (1914)

The spiders of the world see affection and friendship as a means to manipulate. Even in death the poor fly is really the one haunted.

Still, I'd rather be the fly.

October 10th – Lionel Johnson – ‘The Dark Angel’ (1893)

Not a huge fan of religious material, but wrestling with inner demons is interesting.

I think what bothers me is works like this always resolve by just saying their "divinity is stronger" or some such. Not very satisfying.

A new Halloween story starts one week from today. A story told one post a day leading up to Halloween!

Even rats have their scary legends of monsters, including that of The Scratcher. Is it hunting Brick and Kammers?

Stay tuned!

Emily Brontë – ‘And now the house dog stretched once more’ (1839)

I have no idea what's happening in this poem. Why does everyone hate that poor man? Why is the title concerning a dog who appears in the beginning and is then not mentioned again?

Alfred Lord Tennyson – ‘The Kraken’ (1830) #AScareADay

This makes me feel bad for the Kraken. It seems to be a scary story for little Krakens.

oct 4 - The Buried Alive by John Galt (1821)

I love the descriptive nature of earlier writing. I get the sense that our vocabulary has generally decreased through the years. Maybe it's just my own is so poor.

It gave this simple story a truly horrific edge!

I guess if someone is called an old Hag that they might just go ride with the devil. How we are treated would partially define how we behave towards the world, for better or worse.
