The level of idiocy the AI bros are operating at is insane. At the CWI of the University of Amsterdam they have worked for decades on Rascal, a tool for language transformation (which IS used in practice) and even they never pulled off this kind of project.

Spending the holidays processing just how betrayed I feel by the software and web industry

My career has been fifteen years of hope and promise—some fulfilled, some not—followed by a decade where the industry stopped pretending and just looted society

Being a bit angry about it is quite reasonable

Just saw a post by a "fractional cto" saying he led a technological migration, and one of the important changes he pushed for, was to create an abstraction for the payment provider, to make it easier to change in the future.

Really? That's the claim to fame of a "fractional cto"?

I've been Windows free for some months now, but still had some issues to fix, particularly with my desktop.

Took a while (years 🤐) but finally got some Linux distro to play along with my aging Nvidia GPU and 4K display (plus a 1080p one).

I'll say here what I left unstated in my @monktoberfest.com talk: AWS in particular is in a state of cultural collapse because they have done exactly this -- and their RTO mandate has served to decimate organizational trust.
Another awesome @monktoberfest.com talk by @bcantrill.bsky.social ! It's absolutely worth watching the whole talk, but I think the last bit is great way to wrap up, where Bryan talks about broken institutional and organisational trust using RTO example:

Is it some sort of requirement that all "data projects" are a barely readable Python mess?

Jesus Christ, this age verification thing is going to be the most useless and annoying thing we’ve ever done to undermine privacy and democracy in the history of the world.

I vote that all in favor are banned from the internet.

Seems like the original article was wrong.

As things have been happening though, not so sure it won’t happen at some point anyway (even without them acknowledging it).
If you have been sharing that Malwarebytes article on the Gmail thing, you should note the giant correction up top.

Trying to measure coding productivity is, and always will be, a fool's errand.

Why? Because I can go for a walk then take a shower and have an idea, then write a single line of code that fixes everything I was working on.

Immense productivity, but by most metrics I didn't do anything at all.
