AES Andes announced that it will step back from the project INNA, planned near our Paranal Observatory.
We welcome this and expect the project to be withdrawn from Chile's Environmental Assessment Service soon, which would formally confirm the cancelation: https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso2602

Dive into this ultra-detailed image of the Sculptor Galaxy!

Based on observations made with our VLT, it was created by stitching together over 100 exposures, covering an area about 65 000 light-years wide.

Speaking as a scientist who studies the cosmos but who’s never been that interested in doing it with telescopes, it’s both humbling and awe-inspiring to get out and truly see the full night sky with your own two eyes in an area without light pollution. We’re losing something that’s invaluable.
I think people today don't understand just how dramatically the night sky has changed - it looked like it does in super remote areas *everywhere* before the invention of electric lighting, and light pollution that obscures the sky has gotten dramatically worse in the last 25 years.
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.

The application for the ESO Summer Research Programme 2026 has just opened!

It‘s a six week programme in Garching close to Munich where pre-Ph.D students can work on a hands-on project.

Working at @eso.org is a fabulous experience, so please help me spread the word ✨
