I hear great things about Hundred Line Defense Academy but I’m also pretty sure it has a lot of plot that you’re supposed to pay attention to. Disgaea 1 is a different sort of squad-based tactical RPG but you can definitely ignore the plot and have a good time.

Fights in Tight Spaces is a single-avatar game, but does cool things with the tactics/deckbuilder mashup and has absolutely no plot to speak of
