I wrote this when John Chaney died, about what it was like to cover him. He remains the most unique man I ever met. (His name will definitely appear throughout my Philly Hoops book.)

More @bfquinn.bsky.social greatness
From @theathletic.com: A few years ago, Matt Berninger, the singer-songwriter and frontman of The National, was stuck with writer’s block. “I started getting depressed by notebooks.” So he wrote on a baseball instead. Then the words kept coming.

A year ago, doctors told me I had neuroendocrine cancer of the pancreas. I’d probably been living with it for a decade. I will likely never be cured. But after a year of surgeries, radiation and monthly shots with a giant needle, I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. defector.com/my-life-with...

Didn’t get a hit in Little League for 2 seasons until last inning of championship game, when I got a double (and went on to score winning run) … First base coach, my friend Jimmy’s dad, was so excited he slapped me on back rounding first, knocked me down. I got up, both elbows bloodied, ran to 2nd.
what is your personal sports highlight?

mine is: down 2 with like 4 seconds left, deflection sends ball into corner

guy throws the ball in to midcourt and i intercept it, and pass to my teammate who gets fouled shooting a 3

2/3 FT, go to OT

they are down 1, i stuff the j at the elbow. win

Frequent reader but infrequent poster here. I’m well into my 60s Mark. I don’t need idiots explaining why they’re idiots in the name of diversity of thought. Bluesky serving the exact purpose I want as consumer, thank you very much.
The lack of diversity of thought here is really hurting usage.

If this stands up in second half (if … IF) …. would have to go down as one of the great title-winning goals anywhere ever.

Had never been to Southern Italy before. Awesome trip that ended in Naples, where Maradona remains the singular football god, every bit as much as in his native Argentina, or Michael Jordan is in Chicago. (When Napoli scored a goal Sunday at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, the whole city shook.)

So… After nearly 7 years at The Athletic, my time with the company has come to an end. They no longer want to cover Penn State with a full-time beat writer.

Proud of the work I did and the stories I told. Thank you to so many who subscribed.

Duh who doesn’t know that? (I learned it Friday.)
I just realized that Sarah Strong’s mom is Allison Feaster, who put up 35 points and 13 rebounds for Harvard in the first ever March Madness upset of a 1 seed (Stanford) by a 16 seed back in 1998!!!!!

It is a place he loves, but when asked last week if there were a lot things happening there ahead of the Super Bowl, Smith admitted: “Don’t nothing happen in Amite.”

Lots of gold nuggets in here. The coach in Amite was more than ready for Neiburg.
Drove up north to Amite, DeVonta Smith’s hometown, where a proud high school coach is still haunted by Smith’s last championship game at the Superdome.

“Tay-Tay” is home, and a win Sunday would be a “fairytale,” even if it can’t heal a wound from 2016:

Back home in Louisiana, DeVonta Smith will try to erase the pain of a championship loss while a proud community watches
Smith, who grew up in Amite City, once lost a high school state title game at the Superdome. He and his community haven’t forgotten.
