A big part is that since he doesn’t have a core ideological agenda aside from promoting himself, he can be a lot more flexible and limber in the moment.
tbh it's widely underestimated how critical this is to his whole electoral appeal and communication skills. none of his aspirant autocratic successors have a fraction of his comedic abilities

Was just watching a roundtable TV program where comedians were complaining that their peers can't do ethnic or racial or minority-based humor any more because it offends too many of the young audiences.
The show was from 1955. The comedians are Buster Keaton and Bert Lahr.
