I really hate incinerators (euphemistically called "energy from waste" or "energy recovery" plants by industry). They gave government, local and national, the option to stop promoting recycling which they duly took; just 44% of waste is recycled, and a rate that has actually fallen in recent years
Waste incinerators that burn household rubbish to generate power are regularly polluting the air with toxic emissions in breach of legally permitted limits

Best thing for the north would be to make a Yorkshire and a Lancashire on their traditional whole boundaries and make them states equal to Wales in law and practice. Would leave out a few areas including my own, but it would balance power out.

Reposting this piece (from a September heat wave 2 years ago) about how air conditioning could be helpful in tackling climate change.

Air con is usually actually a type of heat pump, and can provide efficient, clean heating as well as cooling

How air conditioning could help us tackle climate change
Heatwaves always lead to debates about air conditioning. But did you know most air con systems could actually be a green and cost-effective way to heat your home?

Healthcare workers care a lot about public health, but hospitals that burn fossil fuels pollute the air and climate, putting people at increased risk of illness, disease and death. This article talks about how hospitals can outgrow fossil fuels by fully electrifying their operations.

With sustainability in mind, Henderson Engineer's Mark Chrisman discusses how all-electric hospitals create more energy-efficient care.

It continues to shock me that India has a nearly fully electrified rail network and the UK, country that invented railways, has Les than 40% of its network electrified.

There are highly polluting diesel trains coming into city centres across the country. Ugh. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Good afternoon to nearly everyone! This is another absolute BANGER of a campaign from the wonderful folks at @cleancitiescampaign.org cleancitiescampaign.org/carspreading/
Carspreading: When big cars make our cities smaller.
Cars are getting bigger – about 1cm wider every two years. The only thing is, our streets aren’t.

Cars are getting 1cm wider every two years. That may not sound much, but over time it adds up, and they're showing no signs of slowing down 😬

That's #carspreading. Our new campaign is calling on city leaders to make parking policies fairer by varying costs based on the size of a car.

First thing: £ per kW is not a great way to measure upfront heat pump costs.

The cost of an installation only increases a bit for a larger heat pump. So if, for example, you started installing smaller heat pumps, you’d expect the cost per kWh to rise even if the actual costs stayed the same.

Have we been duped by the primary energy fallacy?

Critics of renewables often say that we cannot possibly replace the vast amount of fossil fuel we currently use with clean energy.

The good news is that we don’t have to. My article in Medium explains why.
