I know it would be one of those things that playtesters and executives would complain about, but I think at least the big battles should have an uncomfortable moment where not everyone is going to make it.

I don't think it needs rehabilitation because metagaming,ranging from why you want an *exactly* 10' pole to the toxic nonsense in my post above, is to me a value-free word.

And I see we are trying to rehabilitate the word Metagaming, because there are some instances that are harmless or even helpful, and others that are so toxic they drive the group to disband. But it's all still metagaming to me.

I was stunned at the time, had never seen anyone so blatantly leverage the relation between the DM and player so blatantly for in-game gain. I am ashamed to say I actually supported it at first. But it led to a lot of ugliness and the group broke up.

...they picked the Holy Avenger that was all but slated for the Paladin, who was the DM's favorite. In game, he chose it because it was high value and might buy him another staff, but out of game it was to blackmail the DM and his precious Paladin to engineer a way to get his staff back.
