Heiden uses “fitting” a lot. As in: “It’s fitting the road ended here. Otherwise it’d be too easy.” She sees hardship as proof something is meant for her.

Aldous, in his native tongue: “Jokull’s cold balls.”
He doesn't see himself as redeemable in Jokull's eyes, so he swears in vain a lot.

Are there any words, descriptors, or actions that you only use for one specific character?

Something that gives a particular flavor to moments that character is in?

Does it tell us something about them?

I don't use the word manager anywhere, but I immediately pictured the innkeeper: a grizzled man with the patience of a saint who gives off tired manager energy.

Heiden uses what we’d call an arming sword, forged from Airyn, a magical metal lighter than steel but strong for its weight. She pairs it with a parrying dagger in her off hand. The combination makes her an excellent duelist, especially on the move or in cramped quarters.

Alright, time to get into some of those weeds I promised! The theme of this week and next will be fighting-centric. Weapons and armor this week. Militaries next week. Today's #JanuaryWorldbuilders Q: What weapon(s) are used by your MC (or another important character?)
January 15, 2026 at 12:22 PM
Heiden would be all in on souls-likes. Brutal difficulty, punishing bosses, bragging rights. She’d absolutely would want to claim she beat Dark Souls.

Aldous? Cozy management sims with romance. Give him crops to tend, relationships to nurture, and he’ll happily replay Stardew Valley forever.

Hypothetical today! If you were trying to get your characters into videogames, what genre/game would you start them out on?

Would it be similar to the genre you write them in, or completely different?

In Volla and the northern part of the Duchy, pastries are a favorite treat. Wheat is Volla’s biggest crop and export, and people tire of bread fast. Honey, milk, and eggs are common, so leaf-shaped pastries drizzled with honey are popular.

Last question on our "society, broadly" theme for #JanuaryWorldbuilders. What food or drinks are popular in the society you've been talking about? If can be an MC's society, or any one you have an interesting answer for.
January 14, 2026 at 12:49 PM
This might change later, but here’s a snippet from my current WIP, showing how Trikruna and the Cult handle religion differently. I’m already curious how much this will shift in the next draft iteration.

Aldous knows his flaw, though he doesn't know the impact it has on those around him. He believes he deserves nothing, and that energy seeps out of him. Most people overlook him. The ones who care try to gently pry him out of his shell.

Let's talk self-reflection. How good is your character at assessing their flaws?

Do they usually have a good sense of how they are coming across to others?

If not, which way are they usually wrong?

Whoops, accidently deleted my response. 😅 (No confirmation, apparently.) I’m just going to drop a few excerpts showing how people dress in my story. It varies a lot by climate and whether an area is urban or rural.

Also, how do prepositional phrases work with ellipses? Do I still need a comma?
January 13, 2026 at 10:29 PM
One thing that's an issue for everyone is food. The kingdom doesn't have enough farms to feed everyone. Food prices have increased every year. A drought, a swarm of locusts, or war with Volla (who exports x12 more grain than anyone else) could cause widespread famine.
#JanuaryWorldbuilders
Howdy, #JanuaryWorldbuilders! What's plaguing your fictional world's society? (Remember, just pick one or use the MC's society if you have several). Is there classism? Racism? Misogyny? Queerphobia? Is the government run by greedy tyrants? Or are things going relatively okay right now?
January 12, 2026 at 6:38 PM
Hmm, turns out my self-publish budget is also my window replacement budget. 😅
Still, writing in a warm room is nice. Maybe the lower power bill can slowly refill the writing fund.

Way too much. For Aldous and Heiden, I wrote four short stories each to flesh out their characters. Stories set before the inciting incident, where they learn what they later need to unlearn. Only one of Heiden’s made it into the novel.

It’s useful, since I can always tell what they’ll do.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

Technical question today! How much backstory/history for your character have you created that isn’t part of the actual story?

Do you write it down, or is it in your head? What sort of scenarios do you explore?

Aldous and [spoiler]. He comes painfully close. She gives him a gift, but it’s Heiden who speaks with her instead.

Aldous later tells Heiden what he would have said. Heiden is very glad he wasn’t there, because he almost certainly would’ve started a fight.

Are there key characters in your story who never meet?

What would happen if they did? How might it occur?

If not, are there any meetings that were a long time coming?

Have I done a snippet focused on Godwin yet? He lives rent-free in Aldous’s head. I think his character shows though every time he’s on the page, but this one really nails it. He’s always fun to write.

Everywhere: Men, women, and nonbinary people, cis or trans, are accepted for who they are.

Trikruna: All orientations are accepted & parental leave and gender-affirming care are fair. On paper, it looks great. In practice, it's just PR for plausible deniability. Misogyny is common.

Good day, #JanuaryWorldbuilders. This week I'm asking q's about the fictional societies in our fantasy/sci-fi worlds. If you write about many societies, pick one you think has an interesting answer, or the MC's society. How are gender roles handled in this world?

Cry Wolf is a paranormal romance blending sweet, healing love between two very broken lesbians (one being a werewolf) with visceral monster violence as the Russian mob and their ice-queen werewolf threaten the peace of small ski-resort town in the Colorado mountains.

Marianne’s family owns farms in the forest. She has bold ideas: scouting new land, expanding her gardens, getting her hands dirty herself, even flirting below her station. If she had her own money, none of this would be a problem.

Deuteragonist Day 2! Now that we have met your second most important character, let's talk about their goals!

Do they have the same goal as the MC? One that is different but compatible? Or do they clash here?

Someone near me is selling the Six of Crows duology for $15. I like Ninth House, it’s constantly referenced in my craft circles, and that’s a great deal…

but they’ve got those fake “Now on Netflix” stickers you can’t peel off. I might actually pay more for an older copy.

Aldous has a secret he keeps from Heiden and the reader. I like hinting at it just enough to spark curiosity without causing confusion. Hoping this moment hits that balance.

Aldous is a stablemaster, a role that would give him a comfortable steward’s life (middle class). But within the cult, he’s stuck on the lowest rung as an acolyte.

Heiden was a guard, barely above casteless, but her family are wealthy stewards and her brother a politician, so she’s treated well.
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, tell me about your MC's (or another important character if you don't do MCs) role in society. Are they upper or lower class? What job/tasks do they do as part of this society? Are they even a member of a society?
January 9, 2026 at 2:06 PM
Aldous is pretty average. Heiden, on the other hand, is a former guard who clashed with necromancers, magic users who can, among other things, animate once-living tissue. Seeing how people wield that power would break most. Heiden is strong enough not to lose her faith in humanity.

What's your character's weird meter like?

Do they encounter strange (for their world) things? Is ordinary for them very different from ordinary for those around them?

What's the weirdest thing they've seen?

The cult’s hierarchy is pretty straightforward, and so is the southern kingdom’s. Trikruna, on the other hand, has classes within classes, all with strict hierarchies. The militia, the royalty and even families have their own systems layered on top of that, which I didn’t get into here.

Let's see. Aldous was parentified as a child, and he always had to put his life on hold. I don't think he would want kids. But he's protective of children and kind to them.

Heiden loves to travel, party and hates the idea of 'settling down'. So I don't think she would want kids either.

The Abbey is protected by magic that only a chosen few can undo. Between this and the herbs of the forest, sieging it would be more difficult than a proper castle.

NGL, I created the story first. Draft 0 had zero worldbuilding, and draft 1 barely any. I just needed a cult and healing herbs in a cursed forest. I didn’t even realize it was dark fantasy until after the first draft. I was aiming for romantasy, but given Aldous’s arc it was inevitable.

Good morning #JanuaryWorldbuilders! A very broad question that I have no doubt is difficult to answer: What was YOUR beginning of worldbuilding? What was your inspiration? Your initial spark? Another work of fiction? Boredom? A powerful imagination seeking an outlet?
