Devil in Miss Jones is remarkable btw. An insane artistic immolation when easy-street was knocking. Deep Throat opened up the world for hardcore by being breezy fun, so Damiano decided the next test should obviously be Sawdust & Tinsel levels of misery with no intermediate step.
Gerard Damiano after having, against all reasonable expectation, punched hardcore pornography through into the mainstream with Deepthroat: "Okay, so before we get to the sex the woman's gonna kill herself. Yeah, don't worry, the scene will be real slow and legitimately mournful."

Does her husband work for The NYT? Is this the only was she can talk to him about their marriage?
A reader asked the Ethicist: My spouse has rarely cooked for us. Now retired, we have different schedules and I'm not interested in food labor for another 25 years. Is it ethical to discontinue food-related labor for him and suggest he do his thing and I'll do mine? nyti.ms/3LxswJR

Oh, are politics bad? I wouldn't know. I've been watching the movies.

Might have to switch down the difficulty on God of War: Ragnarok. I'm dying more than in a Soulslike. I'm struggling to adapt to the combat which is very hectic but also flimsy. Lots of enemies and every one takes 20 attacks to kill. It's simultaneously boring and busy.

Apparently today I decided on a double-bill about two women in their 40s saying "to hell with expectatins" and reclaiming their lives.

Started God of War: Ragnarok. Will take some adjusting to the combat, which feels a bit flimsy and button-bashy for now but also I'm not doing very well with it. Forgot how everything's punctuated by long speeches that sound like they were written for prestige TV (non-complimentary).

He was probably giving Broderick shit for killing those people in Ireland.
i saw alan alda having dinner with matthew broderick one night at this italian place that was right near that sex shop and two boots pizza in west village in nyc and he was really laying into that little guy, mad as hell. it was fucked up seeing alan alda being quietly furious
Alan Alda is still around

Got some work to do so listening to this again. Might be the album from the last decade I've listened to the most times tbh. It's very lovely but also fits perfectly into the background while doing other stuff.

Had a conversation earlier this week where I asserted Slipknot aren't really nü-metal but I didn't really know what they are. Turns out it's "Groove Metal" which is "thrash metal slowed down" which is... metal? Also apparently Pantera are THE groove metal band? News to me.

My MIL could not understand why we'd ever move to crime-ridden Chicago so it was fun, when she talked about a lovely trip to St. Louis, that it has a significantly higher homicide rate.
A WBEZ and Sun-Times analysis found Democrat-led states like Illinois have lower murder and violent crime rates than some Republican-led states, along with fewer undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
Trump's claims about murder rates and illegal immigration fit red states more than blue states

MTG is a racist, conspiracy-pedaling crackpot but she seems perceptive enough to realize she's never going to be welcomed into MAGA's inner sanctum so she is peeling off to bet on the opposition. It is pathetic that the media will let her do it without even a struggle.
Collins: When the president says there's virtually no inflation and that grocery prices are going down, do you agree with him on that?
Greene: No. I go to the grocery store myself. Grocery prices remain high. Energy prices are high.

Celebrity Traitors kind've a great variant because it becomes a purely psychological game. Earning the money for charity removes all those icky questions of class and privilege that dog regular seasons of reality TV (but maybe enrich them too).

That might be giving the Democrats more credit than they're due but Bannon does seem to understand the gravity of the moment. This is an illegal power grab and if you don't finish it, then you're just a criminal.
Steve Bannon: If we lose the midterms and we lose 2028, some in this room are going to prison, myself included.

Somewhat unrelated but very funny to see all the tacky gold decals Trump's stuck to the walls.
holy shit -- one of Trump's toadies just passed out and the White House event is brought to an abrupt end

I need LB back up because I forgot to log Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion. It's by no means a great movie, but is full of fabulous wardrobe & production design. Also, people are constantly pouring themselves a drink at home, but somehow always in a different location.

Got a copy of God of War: Ragnarok as a gift which is nice because I always did intend to buy it. Now I guess I should maybe play through its predecessor again. I wonder how I'll like it as I've since become a From Soft freak.

Trump will be on his deathbed wishing he could've inflicted misery on just one more poor person.
President Trump says he won’t fund the food aid program until the shutdown ends, contradicting his own administration’s decision a day earlier—and potentially violating a court order in the process. trib.al/53ZgA8R

It's interesting, because when you read about the social codes and class structure of Feudal Japan you think to yourself, "that sounds perfect for me, a samurai." But then every movie made on the subject suggests irresolvable personal paradoxes and inevitable moral decay?

Very happy there's a new season of absurd Korean reality competition show Physical 100, about buff people doing buff things buffly while offering homoerotic* serenades to each other. The twist this season is it's international, with teams from Australia, Turkey, Mongolia etc.

My in-laws sent us this movie as a joke and I swear to God I will not watch it until I've watched the earlier film, "Wiener Dog Nationals" (starring Alicia Witt)
