"it's a giant wake-up call that we have gaps in our public health infrastructure."

Is it though? I feel like those who have been pushing the science denialism narratives driving these changes are specifically and vocally opposed to the concept of being 'woke up'.

I am older than gender markers on passports! How do you regulate gender? By making it a form of government ID. It has nothing to do with state security, only regulation

Watson was not some unique genius. He happened to be in the right place at the right time

Science is a communal effort. The structure of DNA would have been discovered eventually

What actually slows scientific progress is institutional barriers that stop women and POC from becoming scientists

Watson was deeply influential to me as a genomicist, but not how you may assume

From stealing Rosalind Franklin's lab notes to his frequent sexist & racist bioessentialist comments later in life, he showed how the scientific community would still worship a terrible person

Don't idolize bad people

He was a terrible person. Many scientists knew this and still named buildings after him, still invited him to conference dinners. They should be reminded of this now.

If you take the time to read the whole Gates memo (which I did), the bulk of the content was mostly solid and encouraging. Really!

It was the FRAME that was off--very off, from the first line.

And when your framing is off, then how you make decisions and set priorities is off. THAT'S the problem.

Long after the Halloween season has ended, some Great Lakes’ invasive species remain a scary sight: blood-sucking parasites with suction-cup mouths, thousands of rotting fish carcasses washed ashore and sharp mussel shells that puncture the feet of beachgoers ☠️

We have to absolutely hammer this home: Science suffers without the values embedded in DEI 🧪
The Python Software Foundation was recommended for a $1.5M grant from the National Science Foundation. The terms of the award said PSF could not work on DEI, whether or not the grant funding was used for it.

PSF therefore declined the funding.

Science suffers, but commitment to core values remains
TLDR; The PSF has made the decision to put our community and our shared diversity, equity, and inclusion values ahead of seeking $1.5M in new revenue. Please read and share. pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/10/NSF-...

It's all confirmed now, I will be making my drive back home from Nova Scotia to Ontario in December and will be staying in the Soo for the foreseeable future (unless I find a job elsewhere). If any Great Lakes folks are interested in collaborating on something, the New Year should be a great time!
It looks like I may be moving back to Sault Ste Marie in December. I missed being on the Great Lakes, so it will be nice to be back!
