After Biden commuted the sentences of 37 men on federal death row last year, the Trump administration is retaliating by sending them to the supermax. Prisoners are locked in cells smaller than a parking space 22-24 hours a day.

One prisoner told me he fears he won't make it out alive.

My latest:
Death Row Prisoners Granted Clemency by Biden Brace for "Living Hell" Under Trump - Bolts
Trump officials are retaliating by imposing the harshest conditions in the entire federal prison system, including near total isolation.

Some outlets are reporting that DOGE "doesn't exist" anymore. But the fine print on that overturns the whole story: DOGE is just dropping its tarnished brand, not the chainsaw. 🧵

Art. I of the Constitution gives Congress the power to make rules and regulations for the armed forces — including codes of discipline and strictures against following illegal orders. You can’t punish members of Congress for articulating those rules. Also protected by Speech and Debate Clause.

Yet another reason why I think the central scenario on our current trajectory is "Mad Max with minigrids."
A motorcycle ... with an electric motor, so it never needs fuel ... and two foldable solar panels, so it can recharge while parked, thus needing no outlet.

Effectively infinite range. Total freedom.

Harsh but entirely fair critique of Trump's piecemeal plan.
Some notable things in what's being called the "Trump peace plan" but which could not have been more clearly written in Moscow if it came with a 2 for 1 deal on tickets to the Bolshoi Ballet. 🧵

As Killer Mike once said: "Nobody speak, nobody get choked."
Pretty crazy to see Wall Street just coast on vibes. No real government jobs data, no objective measurements, just headlines about everything costing more than they’ve ever cost and every small business being shuttered

Wow, this is a great summary of COP30! All the COPs, come to think of it. 🤔
Wow. People are way too chill around an active & uncontained fire in the building they're standing in.

We’re watching a shift where AI simulates the cohesion and reinforcement that used to require an entire online community. A single person can now build a complete parallel reality with nothing more than a prompt window. Which seems bad.

LLMs give people with delusional belief systems a way to organise those beliefs. The model fills in gaps, supplies connective tissue, and wraps the madness in formal language.
It doesn't make the claims more credible to us, it just tidies them up.

Cities free wild spaces.
Cities are the best human habitat. Cities are what most of us are drawn to. Not Mars or bunkers in the desert or some AI-fever dream, but cities, in all their creative concentrated exuberance.

Cities are where we can be together, learn from each other, celebrate and build our future life on earth.

It is interesting to me how the media seems far less interested in Trump's Murder Memo than you'd expect. Only a few reporters seem to be even trying to get a hold of it, and very few commentators are talking about it. Contrast that with Bush's torture memo, which was a national obsession. Weird.
Trump's illegal murders in the Caribbean just got worse. An internal DOJ memo on the bombings says the victims are waging war on the US, but per NYT, it extensively cites the WH's *own claims* to this effect as evidence!

It gets even darker than that. 1/

So.....did no one else notice that Pennsylvania just dropped RGGI?

This, more than any other data set anywhere right now, matters for climate. This thread contains the signal from the noise.
NEW from me: CO2 emissions in China have now been flat or falling for 18 months, the first time that energy demand growth at or above historical averages doesn't drive emissions up, thanks to the clean energy boom. 🧵👇

China's power sector emissions have been falling for the past 18 months, but it has taken extremely large additions of clean energy to achieve this. This year will highly likely see a record amount of clean power added, sufficient to drive emissions down well into next year.

Emissions from power generation, construction materials, transportation and steel all fell in January-September, but two major obstacles to emission reductions in China stand out: the chemical industry and lack of progress on switching to electric steelmaking.
