It's short- too short to the point where it's hard to even have enough time to experiment with its most fun mechanics, but Utawarerumono Zan is really really good! I'm so excited for Zan 2 to get an English release later this year I NEED MORE OF THIS GAME PLEASE!!!

It's not that other musous don't have depth, obviously they do, but none have anywhere near this much depth in this particular category, it's really refreshing! Most musous don't even have team composition, but even the ones that do are very simple by comparison; no funny number-crunching necessary!

(To be clear, I didn't find these particular team comps myself, they were recommended by someone in my stream chat, Veshral, but the point is good team-building can have some insane results)
I don't know of any other musou that places this much importance on well thought out team-building-

Another one of the deceptively best characters is Kuon. All of her stats are average, yet she has the highest damage potential thanks to her unique passive which increases ATK by 75% when below 50% HP, and a hidden buff from one of her chain-attacks. These stack multiplicatively with other buffs...

One of the best teams in Zan consists of 4 Hakus, a character who has the lowest attack stat and no direct damage buffs. He's entirely a support unit yet he's one of the most effective in the roster because his support so heavily increases potential DPS of other allies- including his clones.

Some characters give stat buffs through unique passives or chain-attacks. Enemy damage output is high and consistent enough that healers are a necessity and aggro management is a factor. Equipment matters beyond raw stat increases, some of these perks completely alter character playstyles.

Some musous get their challenge from requiring strategic thinking during battle, some get it from maximizing attack rotation efficiency and heavy button-mashing; Zan gets its challenge from team-building, something almost entirely unnecessary in most other musous.

Those deeper mechanics are what make Utawarerumono Zan such a great game, so unless you're maxing out all characters' BP like I am these few stages are the only place where you can make full use of those systems AND IT'S HIDDEN BEHIND CO-OP!!!! >:CCCC
January 21, 2026 at 9:33 PM
Dream Arena is a co-op mode, but every co-op stage can be played solo. This is the highest difficulty content, but it's not unreasonably difficult alone and outside of the last few Hard Mode Battle Recollections this is the only content that requires you to make full use of Zan's deeper mechanics!

Free Missions are hit-or-miss but some of the later ones are just as great as Story Mode's best stages, but it's so fucked up that Zan's best content is hidden behind a mode that most people will likely never touch, or even know that they can play alone: Dream Arena.

Story Mode is a terrible adaptation of the VN's story, but that's to be expected, gameplay-wise Story Mode is surprisingly fantastic (something very rare within this genre), especially the last few boss fights, and higher difficulty Battle Recollection versions of those are even better.

This is the 2nd shortest musou I've completed yet, barely surpassing The Ochimusha (a Simple Series game), and I don't want to complain too much about it being short because I prefer that to overstaying its welcome, but it really is far too short. What's there is great but what's there isn't much.

As someone who also worries way too much about audio quality being poor, sometimes it's better to just let it go and get something out without stressing over it too much.
If it makes you feel any better I've never noticed any problems with how you sound in any of your videos!

I still like Atuy more though... she may be less effective at pure damage dealing, but I find her playstyle way more fun and she has evasive options that the twins don't. They're definitely more effective than Atuy, but I've never been a huge fan of stationary characters, good or not.
