I have an MA in archaeology and run a blog called Living in the Longue Durée about ancient history and whatever else. This profile is mostly funny observations about history and science.

So I’ve completed my latest project: a run-through of the history of de-extinction, exploring the many methods that have been tried and treating it as a social phenomenon around science rather than just a snazzily marketed science topic. From Nazi cattle to modern questionable corporate claims.

Maybe this is selection bias but I feel like the UK people I know outside of specifically political circles react in far more muted ways to rights being revoked (juries, internet freedoms, etc.) than people I know from elsewhere. There’s this concerning complacency with democratic backsliding.

I actually love when Christmas decor comes out early and lasts a long time because modern design sensibilities are so full of muddy-concrete-colored beige paint and minimalist floor plans that there’s nothing joyous or fun to look at and so Christmas colors let public spaces have a bit of soul.

If I wanted to travel to the fields of Asphodel and consult the wisdom of James Buchanan but needed to gift him with some joy first, I would show him this thread.

“See, little buddy… Give it enough time and they’ll forget you watched as the Confederacy armed and seceded. You’re alright.”
Is Donald Trump the worst president we’ve ever had?

Just know that if in a few days, y’all start complaining that the appearance of Homo erectus or another member of the genus making a tasteful appearance in Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age “ruins the vibes,” I’m the paleoanthropology goober who’s been manifesting it.

If you’re someone who prefers to speak as loudly as possible to someone on speaker or video call on full public transit, ✨ please stop. ✨

Gonna start a restaurant called Phil & Buster and the fun thing about it is there’s this window where you can see the kitchen and if you want to delay them making someone’s food, you can talk to them at length and they have to stop and listen.

Watched a bit of Young Sheldon just to see and it confirmed to me that I don’t want people to reference Sheldon Cooper as the go-to sitcom autistic comparison. Please give us Dwight Schrute. Sheldon is insufferable.

Sorry, I’m gonna have to stop you right there.

“Ex-Mormon” is an outsider term and not the preferred in-group designator.

Please say “Former-Day Saints.”

Thank you and sorry. Please continue with what you were saying.

My mom just texted me suddenly “mitochondria are pretty cool little ancient organisms.”

She’s been getting really into the immune system and human body science and I guess just stumbled on endosymbiosis theory and wanted to talk to me about it. Very proud of her.

Doctor Who fans 🤝 devout Salafi Muslims.

Heavy emphasis on a class of individuals called the “Companions” with whom the individual often tries to relate and who, by their access to an individual of utmost importance, act as an audience surrogate for humanity’s relation to cosmic order.

Emperor Ling of Han, citing Confucian duty, struggles to recenter his own court authority following the machinations of various eunuchs within his government, leading to the seizure of Chinese provinces by various warlords amidst the Yellow Turban Rebellion, 184 AD.

Every traditional Catholic meme page posts incessantly about how stupid they think Protestants are. It’s kinda funny. They may have the Holy Spirit in their hearts but Martin Luther lives rent-free in their heads.

I’m not used to getting very many likes so when I wake up in the morning and something’s queued up 30 notifications on here on my phone, I’m thinking, “o, shit; what do I need to respond to here? Did I do something wrong?”

Gonna eliminate the ego and achieve enlightenment, unlock my buddha nature, and earn nirvana and then refuse to leave the cycle of samsara not because I’ll be a bodhisattva but because I have some funny bits to stay committed to.

I’m so used to the less plentiful sources of ancient history that sometimes I forget how much of an information overload there can be on recent stuff.

Like I’m trying to learn about the unification of Russia and centralization of it around Moscow and we actually know when these people were born.

Controversial take for the remaining Spore fandom but the game’s stage system was a core point of weakness for the franchise’s continuity. It made game content extremely limited in its impact and lessened meaning of in-game choices. A continuous gameplay experience would have been better for it.

This weekly apartment cleaning, we’re putting on Christmas music. I think this represents something.

I’mma be in Egypt for (Western Christian) Christmas this year so we’re letting the vibes come early around here.

Today in 1718 we lost Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, that most feared of pirates. We’ll never forget the lit fuses in his hair and the acceptance of a royal pardon only to go back out at it again.

We miss you.

Raiding on the high seas just isn’t the same.

A very good boy! 🐾🐕😍

An amazing c. 3,400 year-old ancient Egyptian dog carved from ivory. This leaping dog opens and closes its mouth as if barking by using a lever below its chest.

I think Trump passively respects people who play charismatic personality politics like he does and that’s why he suddenly seems chummy toward Mamdani, who’s absolutely mastered it. Trump sees that and wants it.

Older people who exclusively post politics on here responding with extreme vitriol to political memes by younger folks who hold nearly identical political opinions to them just because they don’t understand sarcasm is one of my favorite extremely common categories of reply.
