I have an MA in archaeology and run a blog called Living in the Longue Durée about ancient history and whatever else. This profile is mostly funny observations about history and science.

Hey, I hope things get better!

It snowed here if you like that sort of thing.

Today in 1718 we lost Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, that most feared of pirates. We’ll never forget the lit fuses in his hair and the acceptance of a royal pardon only to go back out at it again.

We miss you.

Raiding on the high seas just isn’t the same.

For Transgender Day of Remembrance, the “Did you know…” section on English Wikipedia is entirely dedicated to facts about transgender people, especially violence against them. Go check out some of these links.

Trying to register online for my Egyptian visa for when I arrive in Cairo a month from tomorrow and their government website seems utterly allergic to loading a page.

So I’m gonna take it the djed-pillar is not actually some ancient wireless transmission device like the pseudoarchaeologists say.

Some of the writers at BBC really learned about what they like in regards to romance it seems. Good for them.

Temperature hit freezing this morning in Paris so in my usual morning walk there was a fine coating of frost over all the plants in the parks. Here’s a nice emerging winterscape from the Bois de Boulogne.

I’mma be real, homies. I really don’t know what to do with comments like this.

Saturn’s a baby-eater, I suppose, so there’s a dick-sucking joke to be made, but I don’t feel obligated to pretend that a vague statement about the planets with an appropriated Hindu-Buddhist term is meaningful.

Qin Shi Huang: “Actually as First Emperor of China, I will be calling myself zhèn in the first person and that’s just for me. I will also be burying you alive like all the other smartasses.”

I walked a different way than usual this morning and found some Nazi-style sculptures outside the sports complex in Puteaux. On looking into it, the left was by Gaston Cadenet in 1943 and the right by Guy-Charles Revol in 1945. Both very alike to Arno Breker in style. Lingering fascist art.

This comically bad French flag on this (I think) fascist sticker I saw in Boulogne-Billancourt today really captures AI being the visual language of fascism.

I’m curious though if anyone else knows what’s going on here with these two stickers.

📜 🪶 Sir, I write to you with the utmost urgency and to be carried by the fastest horse.

New York is going to elect Zohran Mamdani, a practitioner of the religion of the Turks.

Have the youth no memory of the Barbary Wars? How will our merchants carry out their trade duties? A Tripolitan plot!
