Aside from the negative human impacts, this whole package of policy announcements is going to make the system even more complicated than it is now. The longer the policy is in place, the more reviews the Home Office will need to do - in 15 years time there will be 15 years of reviews being done

On the UK Home Secretary’s proposal to limit refugee status to just two years in the alleged belief that it will reduce the numbers seeking asylum:

People fleeing persecution aren’t on line searching for the ‘best asylum deal’. It’s not a choice anyone would want to make

This seems like a good time to mention that this Labour, you know "protect vulnerable people" government has pretty much closed the last remaining "safe routes" for people to seek asylum in the UK, along with preventing refugees already here being reunited with their spouses or children.

This by Mahmood is frankly not only disgusting, but also massively disingenuous. It equates seeking asylum with illegality, there's nothing illegal about seeking asylum no matter the route. It ignores that Labour's policies penalise those in need of protection, and plays to hard right rhetoric.
On Monday, Shabana Mahmood will announce an overhaul of the asylum system, here’s why ⬇️

It will also mean people's refugee status will be reviewed every 2 and half years. If this policy was in place now, that would mean the Home Office having at least another 67k decisions to process over the next year (the number of initial decision grants made between April 2023 and March 2024)
