Again, the central US economic problem is that rich people got so rich they ran out of ways to invest it all, leading to private equity runs on housing, brands, industries, and at least thirteen variations of outright scams. Taxing excess wealth would immediately make markets less stupid.

"The White House isn't sure whether Trump actually had a phone call or just imagined it" is where we are on the dementia scale now.
An amazing new Trump controversy, Part II of II:

- Saturday afternoon: Trump says he spoke to Bolsonaro the night before and planned to see him “in the very near future”

- Monday afternoon: The Trump White House isn’t sure whether Trump actually had the conversation he referenced two days earlier
White House hedges on Trump’s curious claim about his call with Brazil’s Bolsonaro White House hedges on Trump’s curious claim about his call with Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro
Did the Republican president talk to Bolsonaro as the Brazilian plotted to escape? Trump said yes, but the White House isn’t so sure.

White House announcements in the age of Trump are exhausting because they could be "I have decided to bomb Venezuela" or they could be "I am pleased to announce that on my orders, Paramount will be releasing Rush Hour 4" and not even Trump knows which it's gonna be until after he's said it.

I come bearing good news. Well, a little good news.

MAGA is cracking under the weight of its failures
A declining president, an election stomping, and all-encompassing incompetence are all taking a toll.

Although the scale of this is still to be assessed, this is the inevitable outcome of the monetization of the algorithm. Rage-bait becomes a personal revenue model. Nothing about this should be a surprise.
NEWS: I spent the past 24 hours going through major MAGA accounts on Twitter, and a bombshell development has become clear: most of the right-wing ecosphere is being fed propaganda from foreign actors.

This impacts elections. This impacts discourse. This is major. Subscribe to support my work:

Between this and Sean Duffy and telling us to dress nicer on planes, I think we need fifty New York Times op-eds about the GOP's "scoldy elitism" problem.

the entire beltway media complex is rotten all the way through, I truly believe Nuzzi's just the worst at hiding it
The more Lizza writes the more he indicts himself in serious ethical lapses but there are a lot of editors and publishers who are complicit here, too.

The whole thing is just gross.

(And shout out to the serious journalists who do good work. You deserve better peers and a healthier industry.)

this man has blood on his hands and everyone who supported him and excused him has blood on their hands and I do not want to hear a single fucking Democrat with any position other than "impeach and remove him immediately"

he and his MAHA movement are child killers
Breaking News: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he personally instructed the CDC to abandon its position that vaccines do not cause autism. The move underscores his determination to challenge scientific orthodoxy — in this case, that vaccines save lives — and bend the health department to his will.

Normally I would say that the United States military is as close to unstoppable in a direct military conflict as exists in this cherry-blossom World.

With these incompetents in charge? All bets are off. Particularly with the new kind of war in Ukraine which I'm not confident in our ability to fight
I have a question. Do we really think the administration that can't fill out court documents can launch an actual shooting war without somehow beaching a nuclear submarine or similar screw-ups?

It really feels like MAGA is sliding into depression/chaos of late, seemingly from the stress of everything that's been going wrong. Economy going south, shutdown, Epstein, election losses, courtroom humiliations, House R's turning on each other. And Trump is getting MRIs for (???)...

The Trump team's actions are _so_ focused on how to do the most damage to America that 'do damage' has to be the intentional plan. America pushed them down on the playground in 1st grade and they've lived their lives to get revenge.

Really excellent point that often gets lost in the (deserved) mockery.

These things are not neutral arbiters of truth. They are easily manipulated extensions of the ideology of their creators.

The attempt to shove them into every conceivable knowledge space is an explicitly political project.
The grok stuff is pathetic but it’s also a perfect and undeniable illustration of chatbots as ideology. It’s no less true for chatgpt or other bots, but sometimes not as visible.
