It may feel like our crumbling democracy is so important that it demands all of our time, energy, and creativity to combat, or that distractions from the fight are harmful. Not so.

We fight to preserve the people and things that bring us joy! The very things that will sustain us in the fight.
Broke and exhausted. How in the fuck do I try to promote my work, comics, Patreon, or merch with the world on fire? I feel like a fucking asshole every time I start to type a post about any of it.

When a dated file name is required, I use YYYTMMDD in front of the file name like a civilised person. That means that every new year, I have a little struggle to acclimate to typing the new year in the date because I'm weird like that.

Going out last night meant that I wasn't maintaining the wood stove. I tried my overnight routine (top it off and choke down the airflow for slow burning) but I guess I didn't close it enough because the wood was consumed and the stove cooling when I returned.

This is good enough that I’m willing to link to the hellhole which is LinkedIn. Make of that what you would.
A villain is not a boss fight. A villain is not a costume. A villain is not a motivation sentence pasted like a post-it note on a laptop.

A villain is a system.

And systems only make sense when you understand how they behave over time.

"January embers" keeping up warm since Monday .

Once you dial it in, you have sufficiently hot coals in the AM that will catch the new wood on fire once they get enough air.

Person file systems are tough.

Shared file systems are impossible.

Imaging sharing a desk with several colleagues. You have to touch their shit to get work done, but you also have to put it all back exactly as you found it.

I know it's not really that bad, but sometimes it feels so close.

I don't do a lot of cooking for myself, so you might think that I can't do it well.. Probably true since, like any skill, use it or lose it and I prefer low-prep meals where I don't have to pend a lot of effort making and cleaning up after.

But I cook the heck outta G'ma's Mac & Cheese.

Down to 59F upstairs. Resuscitating the basement wood stove.

I didn't need to waste a fire stick. The coals in the back just needed more air!

I'm normally all about sound isolation/cancelation, but VR is absolutely a use case for open ear buds. I need some awareness of my environment because I can't see my cats, or my wife, before I step on them.

I'll probably get some use out of the house too...we'll see.

The demise of Baker & Taylor is absolutely one of the biggest stories of 2025, and here’s a clear explanation of why.

'Books are going to take longer to get to libraries': What Baker & Taylor's demise means for comics - The Comics Journal
Diamond’s disintegration is not the only crisis facing comics publishers these days. The latest distribution company ceasing to exist is the venerable library distributor Baker & Taylor. If you’re not...

Unexpected furnace repair during a cold snap. $950 for the part, which is on order for Wed. Plus whatever the visit/hourly fee is to do the work.

Could be worse, I suppose. Wood stove is working to keep the house from freezing, but it isn't exactly *warm*.

First full week of the new year. Job 2 resumes today and, with luck, I'm back to playing Jaws of the Lion every other Wednesday with a friend.

The routine is reasserting itself.

Finished The Room VR tonight. It was already pretty good and it just got better as it went. After stumbling a little bit in the church, I felt like I was racing through the rest. I must've had more patience today.

Ha ha .... Got my hair cut and, all of the sudden, the soft strap on my Beyond wouldn't hold on to the back of my head.

Putting the hood up on my light sweater did the trick in a pinch, but then it rubbed against the in-ear buds.

Delightful problems to have compared to :gestures franticly:...

The Room is an excellent series of dark puzzles. I've been solving them on my phonesnfor years. Of course I picked up A Dark Matter to play in VR too.

I'm about halfway through, I think? Not as complex as the first three installments, but still satisfying. The novelty of VR makes up for it.

Setting up a new book in GNUcash for the new year, as I do, and this is the first year where our mortgage is under 100k. Barring any disasters, there's a chance our total debt might be under 100k by the end of 2026.

Of course, the US is one disaster after another these days.

Every time I think about responding online to the horrible news of the day, I fail to find the words to express the depths of my disgust and sadness.

It is a challenge not to be swept away.

Also, my switch to Linux (Bazzite) has been seamless. I still haven't made a serious effort to get VR working (apparently, I need to roll back to an earlier version) but everything else just works.

Nothing runs worse than on Windows. There are a few things that I suspect run better.

So, last night I got back into the arcade/fitness side of VR with Pistol Whip, trying to rebuild my proficiency.

While I got through both campaigns, it wasn't easy. The game was significantly harder than it was on the Quest 2.
