And to be clear, I am not arguing the position that mining for batteries is harmless. There are lots of reasons that statement is not true

But every gram of material we get out of those mines is going to go into a battery which will last 20+ years and will still be there when the battery wears out

I'll essentially just walk through the whole
"you only buy the solar panels and batteries once and then they harvest energy from the sun for free" thing, contrasting it with
"can't stop slurping oil outta the ground or all the machines stop" and stare intensely at camera while I ask which is better

I am pretty well into a script titled "you are being misled about renewable energy"

Not gonna pull out studies. Don't need to go over climate change.

Just a simple, plain conversation where we look at the realities of renewables vs. fossil fuels and I say "stop letting Republicans lie to you"

And also why can't we simultaneously revolutionize extraction industries to be lower-impact, better for workers, etc. we already did this in the coal era and can use the knowledge and infrastructure from nonrenewables to apply better practices for renewable materials?? We're not starting at zero!
"but what about those minerals we need for batteries and solar panels?" those less capable of thinking a few steps ahead will shout.

You see folks, using those other technologies doesn't require that you SET FIRE to the resource you've extracted. Those resources are still there to be recycled.

Maduro is a brutal and oppressive dictator of Venezuela.

Trump has no legitimate legal basis for military action against Venezuela under United States or international law.

Both of those facts are simultaneously true.

Allow me to connect some dots for you:

Too much of the world currently relies for its basic functions on resources which must be continuously extracted. You burn that oil one time and oops, now you need more.

Geopolitical horrors are, in fact, one of the reasons we need to move to renewables ASAP.
