Music, movies and the occasional bit of TV. Sometimes those intersect with other aspects of life.

Completing my countdown of favourite albums of 2025.

1. Getting Killed - Geese

A clear No. 1. An album that feels like it was made for 2025. I find it hard to describe why I like this album. Sometimes I think I don’t even know why I like it but I find it truly compelling.

2. Forward - First Day Back

Without doubt, the discovery of the year for me is First Day Back. This young emo band is full of energy and joy.

3. Hunting Season - Home Is Where

This is a difficult album to write about. Is it emo? Alt-country? Is it indie rock? The answer to each of those questions is yes and that makes for an unusual yet compelling album. Best played loud as hell.

4. I Love People - Cory Hanson

Cory Hanson has been on my years end list before both as a solo artist and as a member of Wand buts he’s never before captured my attention like he has with I Love People.

An album that would have made my end of year list in 2024 had it been released a little earlier is Heavy Metal by Cameron Winter. Released with no fanfare in December 2024, Heavy Metal has become a 2025 favourite. Winter’s voice is unconventional.

5. Bleeds - Wednesday

Wednesday has been one of the premier indie rock bands of the 20s but on Bleeds they have added touches of alt-country to their repertoire. It makes their songs catchier while maintaining their typical high standards.

6. Phonetics On and On - Horsegirl

Horsegirl simply make great guitar driven indie rock. Not sure they will ever take top spot but their talent and cool is undeniable.

7. Rarely Do I Dream - Youth Lagoon

I have been listening to Youth Lagoon for many years now and have always enjoyed his music but there is something about this album in particular that draws me strongly.

As I understand today's discussion, we can stop an ISIS cell by policing the speaker list at writer's festivals and the BA syllabus at Unis. And by "stopping demonstrations." This is madness.

John Howard made Australia a target for terrorism by illegally invading Iraq & contributing to the rise of ISIS who went on to radicalise the Bondi attackers. He should apologise to Jewish Australians, and all Australians. #auspol

Hanson is calling for tougher hate speech laws, while she is currently in court trying to appeal against her loss in a hate speech legal case. A fact not mentioned by a single outlet covering this story.
Hanson at the Bondi memorial calling for students to be "rounded up" and cuts to immigration. The crowd muttering in agreement, and giving her a huge round of applause once she finishes.

And to ban violent, even symbolic, anti-Semitic action is certainly appropriate.

But a ban on peaceful demonstration, which so many Jews have taken part in, against the slaughter & displacement of Palestinians, would spell the end of free speech and ethical political action.

Will the Australian mainstream news media (I'm thinking esp. Ch7 and Ch9) do a report on how Pauline Hanson and James Ashby took advice from the NRA on how to water-down Australia's gun laws in exchange for donations from the gun industry? 🤔 #auspol #BondiBeach #GunLaws

8. Underneath - Floodlights

Floodlights are one of the few bands I know that are reminiscent of the great bands of Australian rock. They sound Australian and their connection to Australia shines through in their music.

9. Twilight Override - Jeff Tweedy

My appreciation for Tweedy comes and goes so it is kind of surprising that a triple album hits the mark. But there is something about it that keeps drawing me in.

White Nights (1985)
Director: Taylor Hackford

I have definitely watched this before but have only fleeting memory of it. As a time capsule from the 80s it is pretty entertaining. The music and dance sequences are great.
