Really feels like in the last year AI boosters have given up the pretense that LLMs will enable any kind of new much less radical literature and the pitch now is solely "it lets you cut corners and spend less time on writing, and you have to use it because everyone else will be cutting corners."

if you didn't know, I was recently a writer-in-residence at the Al & Eurithe Purdy A-frame. after the fact I wrote almost 2000 words about the highs and lows of living and writing in that cottage for 4 weeks and now @robmclennan.bsky.social graciously published these words on periodicities. thanks!

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.
