I’m reading sebag montefiores book about the romanovs right now, and as a person who lets say is predisposed to hate the romanovs, i have to frequently double check the described depraved events to see if they actually happened because it seems like propaganda to me…and they did actually happen
The fact that we have super wealthy and extremely stupid people trying to set themselves up as new nobles has made historical nobility, which I only know from books, far more real to me. These people were not smart, they did not rule well, and rigid hierarchies of domination are very bad.

i'll be a little gracious here and say perhaps platner did get the tattoo and didn't know what it meant. that can happen! what is *unbelievable* to me is that he had it for 20 years, and at no point had it removed or covered up. there is no way he did not learn what it was.
