I was originally going into geophysics. I took a FORTRAN class as part of that major. Now, I'd already been programming since I was 8, but FORTRAN wasn't my preferred language moving forward really.
But that class put me in the UNIX lab on campus, where I got enamored with the system...

Seconding this. Relatedly, I think we should not use weight loss or the "obesity epidemic" as a reason to support active transportation. I see this fairly often in academic paper introductions and I never do it. There are so many health benefits that are actually about health!
I'm all in on the best goals of urbanism, but I don't love this quote. People are fat for many, many reasons. The "obesity epidemic" feeds monstrous profits to the diet industry. Meanwhile, fat hatred kills, including bad service from health care professionals and the harm from weight swings.
