After many requests, I finally accessed what turned out to be the saddest and smallest library I have ever seen. I was surprised to find that the books were not categorized by author or Dewey number but size. I tried to find a book before my allotted time ended and picked a cooking book; the second time I got a novel. I began flipping through the pages in search of solace, as books have always been my safe haven. To my surprise, I discovered handwritten notes scattered throughout the book, dated and written by various detainees over time. These messages were filled with reminders of hope, strength, and the assurance that this, too, shall pass. Tears welled up in my eyes as I read their heartfelt expressions. It’s incredible how human beings can find ways to uplift each other, transcending time, space, and borders if they want to and if they choose to. I continued to turn the pages, holding on to the hope of finding brighter moments in this terrifying situation—all thanks to the kindness of people I had never met.

Day 196: Little Garden of Horrors

I tried a new brand of ink that i picked up in a local shop a couple months ago, but I'm really not happy with how translucent it was, immediately (you can see where I used it in the lower right corner). Good experiment at least; I plan on using it for inkwash now
A 2-panel comic drawn with a combination of felt tip pen and sable brush with inkwash shading. The panels are equal in size, placed horizontally on the same row and both depict me out in my garden watering plants with a hose. Panel 1 has a caption above it saying "One of my tomato plants is... especially huge (~6.5 ft); in the panel I'm looking up at my huge tomato plant that is well over twice the height of the tomato cage I placed around it when it was a seedling. My cats are looking on from the deck glass door. Panel 2 has a top caption that says "I've seen this show before..." and I'm now dressed exactly like Ellen Greene from the film version of 'Little Shop of Horrors,' with a blonde bob wig, fitted leopard-print dress and heels; I'm being lifted up by a tomato plant branch and have dropped the watering hose. My cats are now dressed as the singers from Skid Row with beehive wigs, and are still staring uninterestedly at me through the deck door in the background. There is one absolutely huge tomato with a gaping maw smiling as the plant holds me up in the air by the waist. Beneath the comic is my signature (Kat Baumann), today's date (7-15-2025) and the time I spent drawing this (50 minutes) *Side note, I played Audrey in a community theater production of this show back in 2018 and it was the most fun thing ever; I love this musical.

A picture of Chuck Tingle in the classic pink LOVE IS REAL bag mask, and the following text: I try my best to avoid giving blanket advice to writers, because what works for me is not necessarily going to work for someone else, but one thing I am comfortable with suggesting is that artists use love as a fuel for their art. Love is the most powerful force in the universe, the one consistent across every permutation of every timeline, and I find it to be a sort of endless wellspring in my work. That's not to say there aren't any other valid fuels for your art. You can make art out of anger, or obligation, or fear, and sometimes that art can turn out really great. I just find that, in the long run, love will win out. It has staying power, because all things in the universe have a natural predisposition for turning towards love. To me, horror is such a perfect genre to get this point across. Love shines brightest in the darkness.
