Some of the people in this article have shared their recollections with me before - but on condition of anonymity. Coming forward now is an act of patriotism. Farage’s claim that it never happened is the opposite.

Labour MP Luke Akehurst says he "wholeheartedly welcomes" Mahmood's plans "which I believe will tackle a failure by the previous government to maintain one of the most basic fundamental functions of government, which is control of our borders."

appeasing the far right has never worked out well
I would add that Labour's position:

increases the salience of an issue owned by Farage

endorses the Farage world view

Morally, practically, politically dismal.
Everything about the current 'debate' around this is dismal, not just morally but because it is so stupid. For example:

It conflates asylum-seeking and illegal immigration (and sometimes with migration generally)

It shows no understanding of why there is AS

"The policy and rhetoric is as cruel as anything announced by Nigel Farage. Yet the Home Secretary is planning to sell it to Labour MPs by suggesting that it is the only way to prevent a Reform Government. There is only one way to describe this. It is the politics of the protection racket."
Shabana Mahmood and the Politics of Extortion
Labour's strategy of telling its supporters to back Reform-style policies, or get a Reform Government, is the politics of the protection racket and it is not going to work

The gulf stream that elevates europe’s temperatures is driven by very cold water in the arctic sinking to the ocean bed before flowing south, drawing warming waters north.

The shrinking of the Arctic ice cap puts this current at real risk of collapse
“Global Warming” is probably the last thing that will happen in the northern hemisphere!

With the likely collapse of the AMOC we are more likely to suffer another “Ice Age”!!

I've lost count, how many uturns has Starmer made since his campaign to become Labour Leader?

He and Reeves have a habit of voluntarily painting them selves into a corner on an ill conceived policy only to uturn at the last minute

This is notable in the light of Goodwin’s recent arguments on X that people from minority ethnic background are not British even if they were born and brought up here. I asked the Reform press office last week if they had a response to Goodwin’s views; silence so far.

I try to keep count, I really do, but I can’t keep count of Reform Councillors quitting, or suspended

Quitting aka “ill health brought on by work” has been the largest percentage

Followed by suspensions for falling foul of Reform, or due to criminal charges

KCC have lost 9 since May❗️🤷🏼‍♂️
