I grew up Napier that had bad TV reception from either Wellington WNTV 1 or Auckland AKTV2 which was mostly snow at the start but when it improved on certain nights especially Sundays we had “tea” in front of the box each with a table like the pic. Ralph Harris (I know) Basil Brush, and Cilla Black.

Japan and South Korea can be reached sailing east of the Philippines, in fact that is a more direct route in any case, and our trade routes with SEA are a long way south west of where China operates in the South China Sea. Have a look on google maps.
