Part of me feels like Dark Souls wouldn't have caught on if the first game had difficulty settings. It'd be "cheap", "pointless", etc.
Arcade games had a relatively granular difficulty option via credit feeding and it played a big part in them written off as "button mashers"/"quarter munchers".

It looks fugly, btb is ruined, it’s riddled with microtransactions, there is a whole mode dedicated to that shit, auto rifles are made good which is cringe, the maps are samey ground pound is lame, it’s hella not halo……but it’s my 2nd favorite halo.

This is my favourite game. Every part of it sucks, but each part sucks in a way that GESTURES TOWARD something that would be awesome were it not undermined by every other part. It can't be improved because everything that's terrible about its load-bearing. Did I mention it's the best game ever made?
