i really didn't like her interview with klein, but i also recognize that i'm not one of her constituents and that things like this are laudable
This is the hardest I have seen any member of Congress work to try and address transphobia in Congress, and her ability to get nearly all Democratic lawmakers to sign onto this letter is something any first would applaud

Both the original column and the interview are very thoughtful pieces about this moment in our culture. the desire to conform, to not rock the boat and to maintain status is very strong and I think present in everyone, but it is so crucial to recognize it, and buck it, to understand our own (1/2)

It's why I think combatting despair and doomer narratives is important not just for its own sake (because we deserve better), but also for deliberately refusing to do this government's work for them.

a former NYT columnist not understanding why a unit meant to enforce standards exists is a bit on the nose
“I’ve been hearing that standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She also asked openly, ‘What’s the point of standards?’” one CBS source said.

no please, *do* go deeper into the "Joe McCarthy did nothing wrong" rabbit hole
Andrews is just monologuing, she's subjecting Douthat to the exact experience I'm sure many of us are familiar with, which is trying to talk to a person who already has the entire argument scripted in their head.

Continuing my semi-committed effort to comment on what I read - @brockm.bsky.social's "Plot Against America" (www.notesfromthecircus.com/p/the-plot-a...).

I think it was at times a bit repetitive (as in, I read a couple of paragraphs that I could have sworn I had just read a minute and half (1/x)

If you hear or read this in terms of almost any specific comment or "MAGA Republicanism" targeting individuals or groups — of which there are many — the horror of Klein's emptiness becomes clear.
"Much of what I would describe as Kirk's worst moments were now just standard fair MAGA Republicanism. And the leader of MAGA Republicanism is the President of the United States...we are going to have to live here with each other believing what we believe. Disagreeing in the ways we disagree."

it's funny, in a bad way, that Klein is talking about learning to live with maga Republicans right at a time that Republicans are openly discussing how it is is *impossible* to live with liberals! not even leftists, liberals! If Klein and others want to figure out how to keep a civil society (1/2)
