The core starting point for understanding the 2024 election: the country moved heavily toward Trump *except* where voters heard the most from Kamala Harris.

The Harris campaign was incredibly effective, but she still lost. If we want to do better, we have to look outside campaign operations.
Why Kamala Lost
Campaigns work, but they only work on the margins

Republicans feel no obligation to tell the truth because major media rewards them for lying and attacks Dems for calling them out.

cutting ICE's detention budget ~60% as compared to what they'd get out of a CR and legally restricting them from shuffling funds across budgets are substantive improvements, even if they're not enough, which murray herself is very clear about.
Minibus is out. Democrats were able to include some guardrails in about ICE:
-restricts ICE to spending $3.8 billion of its annual budget
on detention as opposed to being able to spend $10 billion
-$20 million that must be used for body cameras 1/

They cannot cancel the midterms. Period. This county held elections during a hot Civil War, the midterms are happening.

Now, can they damage the integrity of the elections? That might be doable.

I think there's two things at play:

one, mainstream corporate media is afraid of Republicans for financial/ownership reasons and has been generationally bullied into fecklessness

two, some kind of normalization bias optimism by people who want to believe the public isn't so easily manipulable

If you're a major outlet honest about the fact that Republicans are extremists who lied repeatedly and systemically to fool these communities about their actual policies, you might upset a Republican source, advertiser, reader, or owner, so it's best to leave that part out of your story

Gavin Newsom knows how to make news. If there's another Democrat out there who wants to be president, they had better learn how to make news and stop being scared of pissing people off.
“I should’ve brought a bunch of knee pads for all the world leaders”

It’s truly wild that the idea that Putin is pulling the strings on this Greenland stuff isn’t discussed more when he is the clear winner

The VA senate got to these today, and all passed as expected

Abortion rights: 21-18
Post-incarceration voting rights: 21-18
Gay marriage: 26-13
Redistricting: 21-18

April 21st is the first eligible Tuesday, so that’s my guess for referendum EDay
the four VA constitutional amendments passed the HoD

Abortion rights: 64-34
Post-incarceration voting rights: 65-33
Gay marriage: 67-31
Redistricting: 62-33-1

Think the earliest referendum Election Day would be April 21, so early voting would start in early March

I'd like to see more effort by Dems on creating news cycles on the issues we own.

It may involve doing controversial things that the average person doesn't like. And it's harder when you don't have the presidency or a majority. But I think there's still room for improvement.

Run this experiment for 30 years and what would you expect to find?

Note that the experiment is still active - conditions are unchanged and the liar's dividend still pays out handsomely, especially in the beltway.
One of the biggest problems with the information environment is that, on too many political issues, only Democrats are telling the truth.

Beltway journalists respond to that by muddying the waters because it would be gauche to publish "Republican lies, Democrat tells the truth."

Here's the thing about Walker Bragman trying to feud with Jon Stewart: Bragman helped Donald Trump become president and Stewart never did that.

Stewart does a very annoying bothsidesism to burnish his reputation as a truth-teller instead of a gross liberal. But when the chips are down, he helps.

Let's review the facts at hand here: A Democratic administration discovered and prosecuted a case of welfare fraud. Republicans are now using this case to smear hundreds of thousands of immigrants and militarize an entire city.

And your conclusion is that Democrats need to do something different?

This is not a small thing. It's <the> thing. The entire ballgame. For all of 🇺🇸's many faults, we have done this better than ~anyone else for ~forever now, & we're going to do it again, & the people who don't like this are eventually going to lose again.
It's a small thing, but it fills me with civic pride to walk through the giant park near my house and see Hmong families having cookouts, Somali parents pushing their laughing kids on the swings.

Like, here are people who've endured horrors, and my city has welcomed them in to build peaceful lives.
Yes. My theory of the moment is Miller/Vance thought their view that immigrants threaten social solidarity would be widely shared. But ICE raids are driving native-born Americans to show solidarity with immigrants quite courageously. Now Miller is trying to disrupt that alliance with state violence.

What an incredible waste of political capital this would be (it wouldn't stick).

Just put Republican criminals in prison. Just lock them up. Realign the political incentives for a generation. That's the only thing worth prioritizing if you want your grandchildren to live in a republic.

Americans are so calibrated to things that “can’t happen” that it’s actually impossible to communicate to people who don’t pay attention to the news what’s happening now. They straight up do not believe you. And understandably, really, because you do in fact sound insane.

If you advocated for the election of Trump, you do not get to lecture the people who fought him on how to fight him. You are not a leader.
