limiting myself to one Balzac rec: his short story The Unknown Masterpiece is a banger + the house it’s set in still exists and Picasso bought out of love for the story, you can’t go in but it’s fun to walk by it

Ross King’s The Judgment of Paris, fantastic dual bio of Manet and Meissonier/history of the 1870s and Impressionism (I’m also very interested in the Smee book above!)
