There's a certain type of politician that needs to believe themselves to be too moral to get involved in the dirtiness of politics and gets caught in the cognitive dissonance of hiring other people to do it for them.

Gordon Brown was like that with Ed Balls and Damian McBride.

I am obliged to report that when the No 10 spokesman gave this part of the statement there was a brief but heartfelt outbreak of laughter from journalists, one of whom later asked if the PM might thus be interested in a bridge he had to sell.

Senior UK government figures like Healey, Alexander, and now Lammy claiming that the SNP are a national security threat isn't just infantile, it's dangerously delegitimising a democratically elected government, and is the first step in securitising the issue of Scottish self-determination.

It's now emerged that Rachel Reeves' husband knew about the licence she needed. @nickferrarilbc.bsky.social finds holes in Labour MP Chris Bryant's defence.

Really quite disheartening and disappointing to see the Tolkien Society hosting a discussion on “AI in fantasy filmmaking” this year at Oxonmoot.

It feels about as morally and philosophically opposed to Tolkien’s work as a talk on the benefits of deforestation.

President Stubb:

Some of the international media might wonder, "Why is the President of Finland here?" I think the reason is probably that we might come from a small country, but we have a long border with Russia, over 800 miles⤵️

Takeaways from Hamilton:
1) Labour can run a local campaign but still have no strategy;
2) Swinney needs a govt relaunch;
3) SNP problems are not solved by stressing indy;
4) Voters want action from govt on everyday issues;
5) Reform will win seats in 2026;
6) Scot Tories are struggling for air.

Reform move into 13% lead over Labour with Find Out Now. Tories just holding 3rd place & facing the prospect of falling to FOURTH PLACE.

Reform projected majority with not a single Scottish Reform MP.

REF 33% (+4)
LAB 20% (-1)
CON 16% (-3)
LD 15% (+2)
GR 11% (-)

For a few years, a certain type of commentator - including academics that I respect - have been trying to spin the line that a Labour govt would kill the SNP/indy. With a year to go to Holyrood 2026, the opposite is true.
