if they'd just stuck to the "easier emails" part it'd probably have gone a lot better for the AI guys with the public, but they apparently just had to lead their PR roll-out with the "hey CEOs, we will let you lay off most of your employees" part

this is something that has confused me this whole time. virtually every product has been successfully advertised with a pleasant “this will make your life better!” campaign- from, like, DDT to tampons- and yet the AI bros think “use this or we’ll poison your cat” is gonna win friends.

Little Lamb who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life & and tasty turf
And a stream where thou might surf;
Gave thee wool (but not salami)
Set thee by the bright tsunami;
Made thee such a tender tease,
Prince of pastures! Lord of seas!
Little lamb, who made thee?

something i have been meaning to write about for a while (and kinda sorta have poked at it here and there i think?) is that technology development in general only requires as many collaborators as necessary to get over the line, and everybody else to leave those people alone until the unveiling

From harm to children & vulnerable adults to systems that discriminate in ways that are not just unethical but actually illegal -- plus all the disemployment of artists by systems trained *on their work* it's crazy to *not* be upset about AI writ large

You are telling me you are afraid the thing you are building could wipe out either humanity by becomming self conscious or at least wipe the labor market clean, mister Altman? Wow, very cool. I will now see the technology in a good light and be thankfull when it is pushed into my life.

But if you're waiting for the disinfo and hostility to go away completely, you'll be waiting forever.

By constantly putting out correct information in multiple publications, talks, book chapters, and projects, in addition to talking about it all the time on social media. The disinfo and hostility will always exist. The best we can do is to provide alternatives.

I do in fact think that if you work in an industry you bear more responsibility, yes. No one forced me at gunpoint to work with drones, and I'm pretty sure devs working on AI weren't either.

Most Americans use AI but still don’t trust it
A 2025 YouGov survey shows 35% of Americans use AI weekly, yet only 5% trust it deeply. Trust is lowest in healthcare, finance, and personal data sectors despite rising adoption.

Americans seem pretty concerned about AI and this does not seem to be improving!

How Americans View AI and Its Impact on People and Society
Americans are worried about using AI more in daily life, seeing harm to human creativity and relationships. But they’re open to AI use in weather forecasting, medicine and other data-heavy tasks.

Yes, actually, I think it has.

I'm not apologizing for people being shitheads, but I am pointing out that sometimes you must accept that you're in a space that is broadly hostile to what you want to talk about right now, and that you are then faced with either accepting that or finding somewhere else to talk about those things.

i am under no illusions about my actual importance to whatever General Atomics or Anduril are doing, but I still do in fact have more clout than a rando as a drone specialist myself
