Malley and Daniel Levy (who I think is a British Israeli?) are the only Westerners who seem to have actually learned anything from having been involved in the peace process themselves as negotiators.
In a discussion at Harvard, host Tarek Masoud asked former U.S. diplomat and longtime Middle East peace negotiator Rob Malley [ @Rob_Malley ] why Americans should “invest in the Palestinian cause” when Palestinians reject what Masoud called the only “realistic” outcomes available under Israel’s overwhelming power. Malley responded that weakness does not create an obligation to “surrender,” saying “dignity, pride [and] national self-determination matter. You don’t simply say we’re weaker, therefore we’re going to give everything up.” Under the logic Masoud proposed, Malley pointed out, “the Israelis could say: we’re going to give you 10% of the West Bank, you’re going to live in Bantustans… and why shouldn’t the Palestinians accept it?” Malley, who took part in negotiations in the 1990s and early 2000s, said the U.S. peace team “was not that diverse in terms of understanding why a Palestinian may not react as enthusiastically to what some people call a ‘generous’ offer.” He said decades of talks were shaped by a “major discrepancy of narratives”: “The Israelis believe that the original sin was Palestinian rejection of ’48. The Palestinians think it was the partition plan which took away the majority of their land.”
