Great footage of Neil Young in 1972, flipping through bins at a record store and finding bootlegs of his albums! He than confronts the clerk. Neil is pissed.
Pre-Napster, bootlegs were THE big threat to the recording industry. It was a vast shadow operation. It's laughable to think about that now!

I remember enough about what it’s like to be a 15-year-old boy to appreciate the overwhelming temptation that these things, on bus windows, are laying out before the eyes of 15-year-old boys. I’m in my 50s now and I still felt an urge. This won’t end well, mark my words.

As for historical precedent, American higher education -- at least medical schools -- embraced body-snatching as a necessity. With vivisection outlawed in most places, faculty invoked such as a matter of routine. At UM in Baltimore, they might have even borrowed E. A. Poe from Westminster Church.
