The next two @spellboundclub.bsky.social Alternative 80s nights at Komedia Brighton are the Christmas Party on Sat 20 Dec (Info: www.facebook.com/events/10108...), and the New Year's Eve Party (www.facebook.com/events/14821...)

Tickets for both are available from komedia.co.uk/shows/spellb...
Bleakly fun fact for those interested in 80s pop and/or Provos history. When The Colour Field filmed the video to Thinking Of You on Brighton's Palace Pier, they stayed in The Grand Hotel. A few days later the bomb went off, and Terry Hall & co were questioned by CID. www.youtube.com/watch?v=178o...

This is fantastic.
This performance impressed my siblings and I so much that, when my youngest brother was born in January 1988, one sister made a serious pitch for calling him Terence Trent D'Arby (not just Terence, mind you). He ended up being called Brian Terrence.

Been watching TV performances of If You Let Me Stay by Terence Trent D'Arby @sanandamaitreya.bsky.social (for work, but also why not?). This one is particularly astounding. Just look at all the things that happen in the first 45 seconds, before he even sings a note... www.youtube.com/watch?v=etSX...

When the Sixties American comedy show which starred Goldie Hawn was repeated on Channel 4 in the Eighties, my mate said “Have you seen that thing, Rhona Martin’s Laughing?”

Theoretical Wales have theoretically got Canada, Qatar and Switzerland in their theoretical group?

That's it. We're actually going to win the World Cup. I've never been more convinced of anything.

“Beautifully written and meticulously researched... a stunning tribute to the alt-rock icons.”

Those aren't my words (or those of Top Gear magazine), but Classic Pop.

"And this loneliness won't leave me alone" (1968)
"Oh, that loneliness won't leave me alone" (1969)

Gold star if you know which two songs they are.

I also feel like that phrase has been re-used more recently than that (excluding cover versions of the above), but I can't remember where.

To have been involved in even 1% of the great music that Steve Cropper gave us, as guitarist, producer or writer, would blow the minds of most musicians. An almost incalculable legacy. Here he is with Otis, Sam & Dave, Booker T & co on the Stax/Volt revue 1967. RIP. www.dailymotion.com/video/x2ztgrh

Remember, these regime-changers *do not* care about democracy. This is pure PR narrative. The US gladly coups democratically elected leaders (Mosaddegh, Lumumba, Allende, etc), and gladly props up actual autocracies (Saudi, Jordan, Egypt, etc) if it serves their interests.

I think this might be our second-fastest sell-out Spellbound ever. (The first was one just after Covid lockdown, when everyone had gone berskerk with cabin fever.)

Here, for scholars of political systems, we see a nice demonstration of the difference between a country which separates the head of state from the executive, and one which does not. Benjamin Netanyahu at least has to ask for a pardon. Donald Trump just pardons himself. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Highlighting the racism of Nigel Farage, as a child or adult, will only backfire. It's doing his advertising for him. His potential voters LOVE the racism.

Better to highlight that Reform will tank the economy and everyone will be skint, they'll shut down the NHS, they're controlled by Moscow, etc.

I really liked Pam Hogg. She's someone I would often run into at clubs, parties and gigs (esp by Siouxsie, whose outfits she designed). She was always kind to me, and gave off a healthy disrespect for *glances around* all this bullshit, while also BOSSING the bullshit. So sad to hear she's left us.

This is hackneyed observational stand-up fare, I know, but the shittest, most dysfunctional home technology we have is the printer.

Basically we need to take 10 years off, as a species, from even pretending that printers are viable. Do without. Then, in the meantime, someone invent one that works.
