These kind of activities should not be limited to just LLMs news stories. It's good to practice fact checking, critical reading, separate grounded evidence from hype, sensationalism (e.g., negativity, conflict) over nuanced realities, etc. I like how the activity asks to improve a news story.
this "class 9" is such a cool idea for an LLM course!

Agreed. Dignity often gets overshadowed by louder values like success or power.
Dignity is an underrated social value.

The article explains Apache Arrow well, showing how it keeps data in the same binary format across memory, disk, and network. It covers how it speeds up or eliminates serialisation in query result transfers, enables zero-copy operations, supports streaming, and ensures type safety.
How the Apache Arrow Format Accelerates Query Result Transfer
Arrow speeds up query result transfer by slashing (de)serialization overheads. We outline five key attributes of the Arrow format that enable this.

Great comparison! While a complex issue, variety fosters resilience. Also why ensembles in machine learning generally perform better.
We take multivitamins because different nutrients work together to keep us healthy. Diversity at all levels of society does the same. Funny how one is common sense—and the other is rejected by those who fear it.

Meanwhile our UI menus load like a vintage wine ages. Slowly, but with character.
If your web site has a menu, this is how responsive they need to be.

Allow me to present the eco monkey. It's a bit like the chaos monkey, except it targets zombie servers.
- Turn server off.
- If someone screams 😱, turn it back on. This is a wonderful opportunity to test DR and resilience!
- If no one screams, keep it off, and enjoy all the energy savings 💶 🌳.

Spot on!
“Move fast and break things” doesn’t even make sense in software engineering.

Doesn’t even make sense for the crap python scripts running locally.

This is the attitude of people who don’t have to face consequences for their actions.

how i'd learn machine learning in 2025 if i had to start from scratch:

1. find a log that i initially planned to turn into a table leg
2. make it into a puppet that can walk and talk
3. have the puppet, through a series of adventures, turn into a real boy and realize the true value of friendship

The world is awful. The world is much better. The world can be much better.

All three statements are true at the same time. Understanding this is key to solving big global problems.

We believe data & research can help us understand both the problems we face & the progress that’s possible. 🧵

The art of tartling. 🤦. Gives me the fear thinking about it. Mind going blank.
Word of the day is a favourite, from old Scots.

To ‘tartle’ is to hesitate while introducing someone because you have completely forgotten their name.

Hugging Face empowers everyone to use AI to create value and is against monopolization of AI it's a hosting platform above all.
