I lifted her onto the bed. Mayhem ensued. After a while she jumped off. Then she asked for butt scritches, now she is once again grousing at me.

You can also take a dog on a field trip at APA. Less than a day but out of the shelter. Dog friendly bar, trail run, coffee shop. You make notes on their behavior in different scenarios (shop, car, walking) and they get a change of pace, and maybe a treat!
