Whelp, I have some big news! My good friend Rayanne has been running a mobile romance book truck for the last year, and she’s done so well that it’s time to open a brick and mortar. And that’s where I come in! I’m going into business with her to bring Good Girl Books THE STORE to Knoxville!
Rayanne and her golden retriever Poppy in front of a pink truck with bookshelves on the back full of romance books a smutty merch!

Indie authors being expected to divest from Amazon while NYT bestsellers and every major publisher play in their landscape feels very similar to how Exxon tells individual households to lower their thermostats in winter to save the environment

My three audiobooks are currently exclusive to Amazon/Audible, because laziness and higher royalties, but I'd like to distribute them more widely. Except every time I investigate other platforms, it's like "Google Play will use your audiobook to train their AI." NO.

The funniest part of all the billionaires are building bunker stories is the part where they’re sure the class hierarchy will survive the apocalypse.

"I once met a former bodyguard of one billionaire with his own "bunker", who told me his security team's first priority, if this really did happen, would be to eliminate said boss and get in the bunker themselves. And he didn't seem to be joking."
Tech billionaires seem to be doom prepping. Should we be worried?

Yellow book cover with red text. A black woman wearing glasses and a yellow shirtdress stands in the middle of a messy office with a chalkboard of equations in the back. Hovering over her left hand is a rocket held up by magic. A broomstick and a black cat add to witchy vibes

FWIW, when Consumer Reports started looking at lead in protein powder a few years ago, the subsequent scholarly follow-up yielded much less alarming results. Not saying the new CR work is bad, but I’m waiting to see how it’s received by the toxicology community. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Today seems like a good day to remind folks that the Christian school lobby was one of the biggest opponents of the ADA. They fought hard for (and won) exemptions for religious institutions from the law. Private schools are also not required to accept or accommodate disabled students.

The marketing for that movie was INSANE. I think there were Happy Meal Toys? Plus the Madonna soundtrack was everywhere

I gave $100 to this Donors Choose for a teacher in a Chicago neighborhood targeted by ICE who is just trying to get new books for their students. Can you throw in a few bucks to finish out the project? #romancelandia

Taxing billionaires into the sun is a public health measure. Having this much money is obviously very VERY bad for you

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

Ugh, it’s so good. We have this Ukrainian deli here in Knoxville called Potchke that serves a sandwich called “The Bat Mitzvah Show Stopper.” It’s smoked whitefish salad on thick challah (plus tomato, cucumber, and mixed greens). Best sandwich I’ve ever had

We were chatting under the basketball arena in our commencement garb when a student rushed over and asked, “Is anybody here a doctor?” Jeff replied, “…of math?”

(A graduate had passed out and the situation was well in hand. Dr. Denny gave all for his students. And he was sneaky hilarious.)

I dig it. But I think persistent and universal cynicism only feeds the dynamic. Have to find a way to see some good in your fellow man. Otherwise, how will things ever get better?
